I’m looking for a mouthpiece that would be something along the lines of a Denis Wick 5L inner rim, backbore and throat but a Denis Wick 1L cup volume and depth. Basically small everything but very voluminous/deep cup.

Does such a mass produced model mouthpiece exist already? If not, are there any modular ones that when combined match the above description? Definitely got be closer to 30mm than 31mm inner rim.

Compared to trombone mouthpieces where there’s lots of choice in mouthpieces that I’d describe as being disproportionate where you have something like a 6.5AL inner rim but a 12C cup (Yamaha has a 48, 48A and a 48D), There’s not really the same for Tuba and from what I’ve managed to find so far in brand specs, there tends to be more disproportionate ones that are a wider rim/shallower cup than the other way round and I’ve not been able to find any smaller rim/deeper cup mouthpieces with an inner rim that’s 30.00ish.

Probably your best bet is to get ahold of Houser or Doug Elliot.

I play on Sellmansberger mouthpieces exclusively on tuba (made by Houser, Joe has some great options as does Dave with his own lines). I can't foresee ever changing from Joe's stuff on tuba. Plus so many rim options. But I'm not sure if there is much available smaller than 32.00mm. Maybe a special order thing? I image a smaller XD or profundo style rim on which ever cup style you like could be super effective.

I just ordered/received a contrabass trombone mouthpiece for my euph from Doug Elliot. I'm not doing a lot of traditional Euph playing and have a couple other Wick style mouthpieces that can do that. The Elliot piece is much larger for making a real bass like voice when I do "bass trombone" parts at church gigs. It plays great! Much easier/more pleasant sounding than other tuba mouthpiece on a trombone stick things I've played from other manufacturers. I'm sure he could do something similar for what you want.

@pauvog1, did the big mouthpiece lower the pitch? I would look at something like that for a tenor tuba mouthpiece also.

Slightly but not nearly as much as other things I've tried. It is manageable.

Interesting idea. I'd guess this isn't going to help any more than anyone else's ideas, but you might try to track down people who play contrabass French horn (particularly who don't play tuba), and see what they use.

I got a Doug Elliot Contra Bass (trombone) 122 (~31) rim with a P cup, which is the biggest cup he makes with that series. You can get down to a 118 rim, which is about 30mm. I use mine on a 3/4 size BBb tuba, and it works better with my trombone chops than a full sized tuba mouthpiece. Check out his stuff here: http://www.dougelliottmouthpieces.com/cbtuba.html

... which "will hold a single rosebud." I checked, no rosebuds in the garden yet, so no picture of a Denis Wick 5 with rosebud inserted, but I'm pretty sure it would accommodate an average rosebud. Think P is deeper than Wick 5? I can't guess. (The Wick 5 makes an awful bass trombone mouthpiece, if that helps.) Here's an idea for less ambiguous comparison: measure deep an AA battery sits in it. I get 1.3 inches for the Wick 5. (1.48 with AAA battery.)
