They are the same in terms of operational concept. The package's identifier is noted and entered into a system at waypoints.

The technology is probably different. I suspect USPS has a lot of automation to scan actual bar codes which are then entered into the system automatically, and thus gets it right often enough to provide approximately useful tracking. I also suspect that there is zero automation of tracking for Greyhound, and they might not even have bar-code scanners. They might enter waybill numbers manually at each waypoint, which means an incorrect entry or a neglectful employee simply enters the number incorrectly, or doesn't get it scanned at all, and it goes missing. Given the apparent incidence of GPX packages languishing in the corners of station freight storage rooms and warehouses, and perhaps the ease with which package identifiers can be scraped off the package (by accident or otherwise), it's no wonder that the system is unreliable.

My sarcastic point being that - as USPS only informs me that something is "in transit", that's the same exact amount of information that GPX offers when it tells me absolutely nothing.

USPS gives an estimated date of delivery, which is usually pretty accurate, as well as check ins at sorting facilities or on truck for delivery.

But I get the drift...

You can buy insurance for USPS losing stuff.

Which it's all taxpayer dollars anyway, so if you file a claim, you, your family, and your friends are all paying for it.

Are you implying that Government “insurance” programs are not actuarially based??

That they sell what I would go to prison for I tried to pull that??
