He’s roughly a contemporary of my oldest daughter and would come into Memphis every weekend to study horn with my friend, Bob Gilbert - who is actually Alan Gilbert’s uncle.
Brad had braces on his teeth, and was always one of the better horn players in western Tennessee – working very hard. Once the braces were off in the 11th grade, he wiped the floor with everyone in the state (no one anywhere close – a pro in a kid’s body), and then I think he transferred to Interlochen Academy (roughly around the same time my daughter was also the Academy). From there he went to Juilliard, matriculated, and found steady work on the Broadway circuit. Not too long after that, he earned a position in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. I’m a little bit confused about this (foggy memory), but I’m thinking that I played at his wedding…but - if not - perhaps his sister’s…(??)
I just heard that Brad has moved up to the principal chair.
