Come across a great looking King 1135 which I know absolutely nothing about! I seen what it can go for new and wondered how to determine a sell price on a used one?

If it’s in excellent shape I’d say 70-75% of what a new one goes for would be fair. Somewhere in the 3500-3800 range.

That's awesome, where would be the ideal place to try to sell? I know nothing about this! (-:

There are lots of places to do that. I think you could start with our classifieds here. There is also Reverb, Facebook (there are several groups, public and private, for selling tubas and euphoniums, or you could try FB marketplace), and of course there is eBay, but fees are pretty high. You already joined as a member here, why not start here? You have to decide whether you’re willing to ship, expensive, but you can have the buyer cover shipping costs, or if you want to go for a more local sale. Even if buyer covers shipping, it’s a royal pain. Sometimes if the buyer is reasonably close (up to several hours drive) it’s better to drive it and agree to meet halfway.

I will tell you that this horn is a nice model, but it is intended for younger students and only has three valves. Many of the tuba players who hang out here want horns with 4 or more valves. That being said, I can see that some older players might have a use for a horn like this. It’s smaller and lighter than most and could make a good “gig” horn for outdoors, Dixieland, German. Polka, and other such bands.

Good luck! Hope all of this is helpful.

How did you "come across" this tuba?

You'll probably find this hard to believe but it was sitting beside a dumpster in an apartment complex. I believe the owner or owners parents got evicted and the apartment employees responsible for cleaning out the unit placed it along with other belongings beside the dumpster. Not 100% but it makes sense...

You might want to check with the local band program and see if there are music stores that were renting out tubas. These people might’ve split and not cared about returning a rental instrument.

Or.. It's hot. Clear it with the police before you do anything with it.
