Saw these at MWRTEC, but didn't get a chance to try any. Have you tried these out in a performance setting Chris, any feedback from the other players?

I'm confused. The second picture looks like tiny tubes inside the mouthpiece, but the first picture looks like they're much too big for that.

They are indeed tubes of varying lengths that are inserted into the throat of the mouthpiece from the cup side. The longest tube offers the most resistance, the shortest, the least. I've used them for abbreviated warm ups without the horn. It's also a training aid to assist beginners achieve a good buzz and develop good fundamentals of air makes buzz makes sound. The tubes can be used while playing and Bob states that the longest tube can be used in muted passages if a mute is not available.
The device is for use with tuba mouthpieces with a minimum throat size of 8.1mm. This rules out many bass tuba mouthpieces. I suggest trying a set.
