I found this interesting looking B&S tuba and was wondering if knows anything about it? Is it a custom make or is it something B&S only makes to order?

I've never seen or heard of anything like that. Looks wild!

I like the guard plate for resting your right hand.
The rest...
... seems like a little much. Reminds me of that Rudy F that Albert Weirder(sp?) has, where like every finger has got something going on, plus a double lever 5th valve, and a few foot pedals and a little help from a friend for a few extra valves, plus...

Seems like the 3100 with a MTS doohickey for the right thumb would be a simpler solution.

impressively gadgety, but *wonkiness/weirdness defines not much curb appeal.
factory standard equipment main slide triggers:
death knells for the sales of new brass instruments...ie. "HEY !!! THIS INSTRUMENT PLAYS OUT-OF-TUNE !!!"

*I suspect - even though they play like a dream - the reason that not many FatBastards were ever sold by Mira, and they've sold more of the not-nearly-as-nice-playing-but-more-curb-appeal subsequent model.

I see this as the product of German tuba players and engineers who said "We must build it because we can build it"
I bet it sounds nice, though!

Based on youtube demos, not a high percentage of F tubas (nor other tubas) particularly do.

this (Q/W-model) tuba:
I wonder if that "erect" circuit might attract some business.

It is a standard 5-valved F tuba with a huge-bore 6th "quint" valve.
The only things I actually DISLIKE about it are the doofus-looking quint slide routing (oh, the wankery!) and that they have effectively made 1st inaccessible by either hand, so it *has* to have a trigger. That is sort of stupidly overengineered if you ask me. But whatever. It seems like they needed to think this one out a bit longer…

So, the instrument was designed by Walter Hilgers and it looks like an updated version of his old instrument judging from the picture below. But from the looks of the design of the B&S horn it seems they were trying to improve the intonation, as according to some instrument manufacturers the fewer curves and bends there are on a horn the better the intonation. Hence the German single wrap on F tubas and double wrap on contrabass. Whether or not this is true, who knows. But regardless, I believe Walter Hilgers did design the MW 197 which according some sources is the best pro B flats on the market.

197 tubas are pretty rare (more rare than something I’ve been able to play test), and some are always excited when one comes up for sale used, but I’ve never seen anyone (who has played them) brag about their intonation characteristics.
To be sure, I’m always ready to give anything a shot.
