Hello together,
is anyone coming to Germany from the Chicago area in the next few weeks and could bring a tuba? Or does anyone have a good suggestion on how to bring an F tuba to Germany cheaply?
Thank you

Shipping large items from the USA to Europe (unlike the other way around) is so expensive, that the cheapest way might be for you to shop for a bargain priced round-trip plane ticket for yourself, and come and get it.
Since your duty rates are so confiscatory, you might consider bringing a piece of crap tuba over here (that maybe you can sell while youβre here), and carrying the F tuba back through customs β claiming itβs the same instrument.

I just payed for round trip economy to Europe, a month in the future, two seats - ca. $5K. If there are bargains these days in air travel, I sure missed them.
Air freight rates have gone up, too, but maybe not the way passenger rates have just recently. There was a lot of pressure because of ocean freight problems - ports, etc. - that have receded, so demand has dropped.

Goodness, that's a lot of money.
I ended up not able to do it just yet... But when I priced out 7 days in Paris including airfare and hotel a few months ago, it was quite possible within about $3k total for two people.
More obscure/less direct starting and ending airports will be more expensive, of course.

Daniel -- sorry I can't offer a turn-and-burn service with the box I just got from you. Horn arrived without incident, but the cardboard box isn't flightworthy for a return trip.
Minneapolis to Frankfurt next month is under $900.

No problem! You mean the flight is under $900 or shipping a new box is under 900? I would pay that!

Oh, I just went to Expedia and checked MSP to FRA for the flight price. Might be better from Chicago itself since it's a busier airport.
I don't think I paid attention to the trip length though. I usually look at 1-week trips, which I'm sure a shorter duration costs a lot more than a longer trip.

Hmm... a "two day trip" is expensive. I think more expensive from Germany to US than other way...

That's just about how stuff is...
- airfare "that way" is affordable, but shipping "that way" is prohibitive
- airfare "this way" is prohibitive, but shipping "this way" is affordable
