Those are very good...They're offered semi-regularly in the $7500 - $8000 asking range.

They're commonly in use (along with a few of the 197's) in central European orchestras.

I bided my time for something else.

Still available! Take a vacation, avoid the fires, and grab a tuba?

These tubas:
* sound great
* loads of fun to play
* completely underwhelming and super boring to look at in internet/no-context photographs
* very large and very interesting to behold in real life

Bort2.0 nailed it!
Maybe it’s that the valves seem so small, or the great expanses of plain smooth tubing aren’t engaging. And showing it standing on its bell makes the bell look much smaller than it deserves to look.

This practicing trick actually seems to be working!
playing some old German rotary tubas for free

I think my Rudy 5/4 was like that too... I think it's just hard to understand how large the bottom bow actually is based on a photograph. In person, it's really quite exciting.
