Our Concert Band is now reading through possible music for the program for our next concert which will be March 4, 2023. In our folders is a collection of somewhat eclectic music. My favourite so far is Alfred Reed's "Armenian Dances". It provides several rhythmic challenges for sure. The program is by no means set. We will be plowing through many other pieces before the program is set. Hopefully, many more good choices to come!

I love Reed! "Armenian Dances" Part 1 or Part 2? They are very different pieces. Both are a lot of fun to play, but Part 2 is the one I prefer, tuba-wise.

Lolol! I did not realize there even were TWO parts to it until I looked it up on Youtube this afternoon. We just plowed through it for the first time last night, so I'll have to go back and check to see which part it is!

I have Radiant Joy by Steven Bryant. This piece has the lowest note I will have officially played in a concert: pedal Ab.

Reading rehearsals (whether a concert is tomorrow or two-months-a-way - ' see what I did there?) are the most fun, IMO.

Part One is what we are rehearsing. After extensive research, meaning I looked at the folder containing all of the scores! We'll be plowing through it again this Wednesday evening. We have until the 4th of March, 2023. Surely we should have it by then!

I had forgotten about the Armenian Dances. Our conductor back in 2017 received his doctorate in conducting under Alfred Reed, and he programmed Alfred Reed a lot. Our March 27, 2017 concert was all Alfred Reed:

Unfortunately due to potential copyright problems I've restricted use of the LCCB Performances site to performers, so I can't share the username and password here. A PM to me should do the trick, though. Divertimento is fiendishly difficult meter-wise, and our soloist was a professional. I'm listening right now...

Since I hadn't heard of these (mea culpa,) I went and looked on Youtube. I saw what appeared to be a contrabass clarinet as well as a contra bassoon. One band had four string basses in it too. The speakers on my computer didn't do it justice though.

I Love the Armenian Dances. 2 weeks ago I had a concert on which it was programmed.
I didn't know at the time that there was somebody on the balcony making a recording (with her telephone) of the piece.
As you can see my bell was pointed straight at the telephone
