This beastly huge horn has a fat sound you would expect from a 6/4 BAT and goes to 11. It was recently serviced and cleaned. While most of the lacquer remains intact, it is missing from areas where dents were recently removed.
The slides are good and move nicely. The valves are in really nice condition, however the third valve shows dents on the bottom. It was most likely dropped twice. Compression is solid. The body case bears the inscription, "U.S.N.", which would indicate it was owned by the US Navy. I'm guessing that's why the lacquer shows the wear it does, but being as old as this beast is, it has held up nicely for 6 decades. All of the braces on this BAT show no signs of repairs from ever breaking.
Playing this horn is really fun. It doesn't require the air you might expect to create huge sound. It plays remarkably well in tune for a 6/4 with the F just below the staff needing extra work.
The original cases for the body and bell are functional and included in the sale. The stand is not.
This BAT might make an excellent candidate for a frankenhorn, with perhaps a lighter, Chinese upright bell, added 4th valve, and a vented 1st valve, but being in the good condition it's in and how well it plays, I didn't want to Fork it up.
