Does the HB-2 rotary Hirsbrunner CC exhibit:
1. The challenging tuning characteristics with valves 2+3 engaged
2. The challenge in response around low Bb/A/Ab/G
that many examples of the HB-21 (piston, no curlicue mouthpipe) Hirsbrunner CC exhibit?

I believe they have less intonation issues compared to the hb21. A friend of mine down in Evansville has the rotary valve HB. I don’t know the model number but it’s the one with the plastic rotor valves that can seize up on a hot day. I remember it played really well.

The model 2’s don’t have that redesigned (messed up) main bugle that the 21’s have. Both the piston (the one I just bought) and rotary model 2’s have good pitch with 2-3 in my experience.
The few rotary ones I’ve played had a little bit difficult low A, but after you play it for a half hour it ceases to be a problem. Same with my 2P. I’ve been playing it a lot and I’m used to the slightly tighter response down low. Works great after you get used to it.
Just watch out for those plastic rotors. Terrible design idea.

I owned an HB2 for 8 years. It was the easiest horn to play I have had. Pitch great no problem with any note all the way down. The guy I sold it to 25+ years ago still has it and loves it. Sold it to pay for my Nirschl York. A few years later I got a PT20 rotor that was close but not quite as good.
Great instrument
