Hymns and chorales serve a multitude of purposes in warming up. The band comes together as an ensemble with tuning, balance, articulation, tone, entrances/releases, note lengths, time, rhythm, and generally working/following as a single unit. And hymns and chorales are beautiful music.

Very nice!! The British Brass band I'm a member of, utilize for warm-ups "The Extended 120 Hymns For Brass Band" from publishers Wright & Round. We will at times spend 10+ minutes getting it 'together' with a single warm-up number.

Not to take away from the nice sounding band, but a pretty good book to warm up any sort of band is an old old book called T.I.P P.S. for Band. Each of those letters stands for an aspect of good playing. There were probably at least eight or maybe even more warmup sets in the book - each of which which includes several drills which concentrated on tuning and ensemble, and then each one would finish up with a Bach or Bach style chorale. Each warm-up set was in a different key.
