The Berliner Tuba, a rebuild from Meister Schmidt from Markneukirchen

Post by Kontrabasstuba »

Finally the time has come. Today I would like to give you a sound example of the Berliner F- Tuba. It was built by Master Stephan Schmidt from Markneukirchen www.hsm-brass.de

It is a replica of a Berliner tuba from 1850. The original is a Julius Lemcke from Berlin. Like the original, the replica has a 15mm Berliner pumpen valves and an (almost) cylindrical leadpipe.

I played the Bombardon aria from the opera: Das Goldenes Kreuz by Ignaz Brüll. At the piano the fantastic Natalia Nazarenus.
Have fun listening 🎵🎶

It is a Contrabasstrombone mouthpiece from Laetzsch Bremen. I had it in a box and it works very well.
It is hemispherical in the cup. Works well with zylindrical leadpipes

This instrument would sound awesome on Berlioz and Ravel pieces. Bravo!

But...that's what the French tuba is for. Why "Berliner" for French repertoire?

To my lame ear, the two sound similar, with the tactile and layout advantage going to this design. Both sound like an improved ophicleide to me.

Noooo. Timbrely (if that ain't a word, it oughta be!) they're very different, and I'd bet it's because of the very different bell flares, and the fact that the Berliner is in F, and the French tuba a 5th higher.

@LeMark
Yes, sure!
The rebuild is traditional valve setting.

The historic one is 2+3 (two left hand and three right hand)

1. whole tone
2. half tone
3. a tone and a half
4. long half tone
5. a forth
