Re: possibly thousand-year-old tuba?
I was wracking my brain trying to come up with some smart-ass joke when I saw this on eBay, but you beat me to it.

Imagine the sound those must have made when the Vikings attacked a settlement!

If it’s tourist season, why can’t we shoot them?

I like the engraving too...
...but not knowing whether the bell is 14" or 19" in diameter, nor whether there are any cracks in it...I abstained.

Re: possibly thousand-year-old tuba?
Sorry for not hazarding my guess earlier...
I figure it for a similar maker to Lyon & Healy Own Makes, though perhaps the later variety, mainly based on the ferrules.
And on general outline, i say that doesn't look dissimilar to my L & H own make, which if memory serves, the bell wasn't unusually large, so... 16" or so? If i ain't already in another thread, i can measure it, if you want.
What do ya call the bugle corp style tubas? That ya play like bazookas? I always wanted to call them Over The Shoulder, because if you don't know that refers to Civil war era instruments?
Anyway, one of them is up for sale (ebay, local pick up only in Trenton, NJ, and besides a proper OTS, it's as close to a thousand year old as you're likely to find in the new world...

Re: possibly thousand-year-old tuba?
American Climax (another name associated with Lyon and Healy, i think?) apparently has pistons that are a close enough match for Viking...
And the Vikings (the NFL variant) somehow seem to be doing better than their start to the season led us to expect... Behold, the merits of low expectations!
