I got to play a fun solo…

Post by Doc »

Things don’t always go perfectly or as planned with live music, especially outdoors at Oktoberfest. Intonation challenges because of extreme heat and humidity, serious lack of beer, lots of talking/noise/etc., conductor tries to go a lot faster than expected… Stuff happens. Just roll with the flow, grip it and rip it. The only thing I’m actually a little disappointed in is the camera was not closer to better capture the audio. The rest is what it is.

top-action B-flat...??

Is the tuba as mellow-sounding as the recording?

15” Imperial Eb. It does not sound that mellow up close or indoors.

Is that your brass band? That's a fun kind of piece for a casual audience. There must be a lot of G&S brass band arrangements. Something about the audio reminded me of Edison cylinder recordings, which is cool.

edit: If I'd bothered to read the YouTube page, I'd have got my answer.

Yes on all counts. 👍🏼

I’m not sure Edison ever had a deadcat for his microphones (you can see the hairs flying around), but he probably didn’t record much outside in the breeze at Oktoberfest either. I’m relieved you weren’t drawing a parallel between the age of cylinder audio to the age of the player. 🤣🤣🤣

I think it's the wind and noise and the brass band vibrato that all comes together to remind me of those old mechanical recordings.

Sounds like your group knows how to have fun and entertain a crowd.

I’ll likely post a couple of other tunes that don’t have excessive wind noise. We do lots of crowd participation at events like this. Not concert-perfect, but definitely fun:

People drumming on plastic garbage cans during Sing, Sing, Sing, a kids’trombone (Pbone) parade during 76 trombones, and we raffle off a chance to conduct the band on Colonel Bogey March. And being the resident Oktoberfest guy in the band, I lead Ein Prosit (complete with remedial crowd training when necessary😂).
