...the coolest person you know...??

Post by bloke »

I would have to say the the "coolest person I know" is Alan Gilbert's uncle.

He's a life-long horn player, grew up in Memphis, was principal horn in Pershing's Own (stayed in just long enough to fulfull his obligation and stay out of 'nam), as well as principal in Hong Kong and other orchestras.

When he was in school at Indiana he went on a double-header tour playing for Henry Mancini - with Brazil 66 being the after-intermission act. :smilie8:

When they would fly from city-to-city (and Don Harry was on that tour as well...) my friend would often sit next to Lani Hall and chit-chat. :bugeyes:

Lani during Brazil 66 years:

Lani - roughly a decade and a half later. (NO ONE can sing octaves as well in-tune as could Lani...Listen to a B-66 tune "So Many Stars":

There just are hardly any pictures of my friend on the web...but here's one of him taken thirteen years ago.
This was a reject shot - with the "keeper" being one whereby he was behind the piano with the rest of us...
...but - for these purposes - the picture is perfect:

He was a Phil Farkas student, and also attended wild parties at Bill Bell's house. (no wild behavior that I know of on his part... ie. an observer)

@Doc

Perhaps two decades ago, there was a polka gig, I had promised five musicians, but was only able to line of four of the usual suspects.

I called my friend, asked him if he would like to improvise some off-beats and countermelodies (horn) for a couple of sets, he agreed (I'm sure he'd never done anything like that before) and did a fantastic job...everything within the chords...

...He's also a terrific arranger (mostly: brass quintets - at least, that I know of).
