“ It was the first song I’d ever written the words first. I never wrote words first, it was always some kind of accompaniment, I’ve hardly ever done it since either. We were on a tour bus going to a gig and so I started with the words. I had in mind a little country and western song. We played the Moss Empire circuit a lot, and there were always these nice big empty backstage areas. The places have all become bingo halls now. We arrived at the gig and I remember being in one of these big backstage areas and there was a piano there so I’d got my instrument. I didn’t have a guitar, it was probably with our road manager, and I remember working the tune out to it on the piano. It was a good show song, it worked well live.”

Shuffle. Not skiffle.

To be more convincing as country, it would need to be slowed down (not a ton, but) somewhat.
As it is, is sounds "sorta" like several things, yes?

The fact that it “sounds like” several different things shows that the Beatles had multiple influences. But don’t forget that they started out (back in the Quarrymen and Silver Beatles days) as a skiffle band, and a lot of their early stuff has a lot of that influence apparent. Skiffle itself was influenced by a variety of genres.

Yeah, take away the walking bass line, slow it down just ten clicks, and it's country.

It appears George had been listening to Ringo's Buck Owens records when he wrote the guitar solo.

I offered "rockabilly" as a choice because (not the bass, but) often in the MELODY, they affected the melodic rhythm to reflect a rockabilly type of bass groove - such as that heard in Elvis "You Ain't Nothing But A Hound Dog".
