February pops

Post by bloke »

Feb. pops are always Valentines Day themed...so (often) Broadway themed as well.
(Where else are you going to find that many love songs - other than 60's rock...and 60's rock would end up being a 60's rock pops, would it not?)

I like Broadway stuff, because it gives me a change to pull out FatBastard and play a bunch of oom-pahs and bass lines.

I'm looking through the list and PDFs on the musicians webpage...

I see that it opens with that Carousel "selection" (ie. medley)...' cool enough..., followed by Cinema Paradiso (strings/keyboard), Shallow (from the most recent "A Star is Born" - ie. Gaga - movie), L.O.V.E. (which actually has a cimbasso/trombone 4 part, but I might actually bring my bass guitar - since none of you have scraped up the money to buy it...yet - and play the bass guitar part, which is a much more fun part), Theme from "Love Story" (again: another break/strings-only), Close To You (donuts and doo-dat-dah's...but whatev'), GREASE! (will play in cimbasso), The King and I (another one of those old-school selection/medley things...which I dig), Moon River (more donuts, but who doesn't like Mancini...and - once, back in the 80's - I got to play a show with Mr. Mancini, playing all his hits :smilie8: , Don't Cry For Me, Argentina (a clever array of rests and donuts, but good listening - particularly if the singer they hire is really good), Phantom Of The Opera (medley...' looks to be the same one that many of you have played with your community bands...lotsa notes...but - no complicated button-mashing involved - lotsa repeated notes), I Will Always Love You (might cover electric bass on this, because the tuba counts rests until the last fifth-or-so of the song...I surely hope that the hired singer can adequately cover this tune! - I'm going to wager that it will be Lolo https://www.lolomusic.com )...

...I'd also wager that at least three or four more things will either show up in the dropbox or be passed out during one of the rehearsals.

I like shows like this one: fun read-'em-downs / no stress / great hang with my low brass buds / some laughs / maybe (??) a free meal from the maestro (who likes to hang with us as well...and - believe it or not - he's hilarious/fun/down to earth...When eating out with him, sometimes we talk about music, sometimes misc., and sometimes he and we have cut-down contests - ie. making fun of each others' individual quirks  ).

something else:
Having a b.s./no-practicing-required February show gives me more time to work on Tippett 4 for the March show (not only playing the part well, but teaching myself how to fit it in with all of the other complicated cacophony. )

I am NOT identifying any individual as a kook, but if I refused to play gigs whereby there was at least one kook in the ensemble, I would never play any gigs... and anyone who wishes can go ahead and laugh at the last statement, because it can easily be turned around backwards referring to myself - as sort of a Reflexive Axiom thing.

I would sort of assume that if a musician prefers to them self (trendishly) as a "activist", that means that they perform for free when radical political groups hold rallies.
