first one I've seen in brass...I wonder if it was stripped/polished.

There is a 5 valve for sale in The Netherlands. Quite an odd layout with 4 and 5 on the front

It's silver or nickel or whatever they are. More evident in this photo where you can see a few spots of bare brass poking through:

Hey, I own that horn now!

A few Saturdays ago, I drug myself out of bed after getting home late from a big band job the night before and made the 7 hour drive from NE Ohio to Chicago to pick it up. I have played bass & tenor trombone professionally for a couple decades but this is my first tuba. Got it to get my doubling act together. Got it back from my tech recently, and can confirm that it is silver (not nickel) plated.

I think it's extra cool that it's what Howard played for most of his career. He and I are from the same town in Ohio, he came back to work and perform with our jazz band when I was a senior in high school. Blew my young mind, that was the first time I had been in the presence of a musician at that level. Several years later, we connected on Facebook and corresponded somewhat regularly. He was one of the most kind and encouraging people I have ever met, to say nothing of his musical accolades. I miss him.

Fantastic, and very cool story/connection! Congrats on the new tuba!

I would view those as more desirable - in really good condition - than the B&S made knockoff.

The bore size of the genuine one - I'm thinking - is a full millimeter smaller than the B&S knockoff made later. I strongly suspect that those solos - in those rare videos that Mr Johnson played on his - were far more accessible than they would have been with the copy.
