As to not further add to the FS ad for a #11…

I have #10 here. I never use it. I have a question about these in general. It was mentioned that there is batting inside the mute. My mute has no batting. It is completely empty.

Could someone please describe this batting? Maybe take a picture?

I know craft stores sell loose fiberfill for pillows and roll batting for quilts, etc. because my wife has made a few quilts as presents for people. I’m wondering if I bought one these products I could duplicate the conditions described of there being batting inside other Schlipf practice mutes. I bought the mute used (it looks essentially new). I don’t know if the batting was removed or if it just never existed in this particular mute. I can’t ask the seller about it because they passed several years ago. Any insight would helpful. Thanks very much!

I have not seen a single Schlipf tuba mute without what Chris Hite referred to as batting in another thread. The mute is essentially empty inside, but, adhering to the wooden top piece on the inside is about 1/4 " to 1/2" or so of a white, fibrous material, to help arrest resonance and keep it quiet. It's not like the mute cone is full of insulation, or even a couple of inches, it is minimal. Most of the time that Schlipf was shipping these to me, he sent them to me not assembled, so he could put 10 cones in a relatively small box, all stacked inside each other, and another box of tops, etc., to save on shipping costs. So, I have assembled a lot of these in my shop, and they are virtually identical. On the white fibrous material inside, there is a number put on with a black marker. This number inside is proof positive of the mute size.

I hope that this helps clear this up.

so, also the ones not shipped to Lee Stofer in parts (mine is purchased in the EU) have the fibrous material inside with the mute number on it

Just a quick follow up on this…

There is, indeed, a thin “liner” of some sort of material inside on the top of this #10. It also has “10” written on it. The material looks just like the picture posted above. So, not a fluffy batting, per se, but rather something flat and apparently somewhat thin to dampen/absorb sound. Johann Schlipfinger seems to have put a lot of thought into the details with these practice mutes.
