It's been reported on Facebook that Howard Johnson is in Hospice. I have no first hand knowledge of this, but if anyone hears any official updates, please let us know
EDIT: I guess that's a false alarm, so this thread just became the HoJo appreciation thread

2020 sucks. I remember reading an article about him in Down Beat Magazine when I was in junior high and had a fan letter published. I have a Mahillon tuba being refurbished, in big part, because I wanted to have the tuba he played for all those great albums

Really sorry to hear this. He must be close to 80 years old? God Bless you Howard.
We've got quite a few tuba legends who are getting up there in years... Roger Bobo, Chuck Dallenbach, Bob Tucci, to name a few... Connie Weldon passed away earlier this year, she was (I think) 88 years old.

Extremely sorry to hear this. Great player and from what I've heard an equally great person.

I hate to admit this
, but (ref: a post just above) the first thing I thought about (when I heard this sad news) is the nearly-complete Mahillon 4-valve B-flat that (incomplete) is sitting upstairs in it's case.
dumb: A couple of parts need to be nickel plated (to match the rest), and I've never taken care of that.
They are really unusual instruments, in that their bodies are full-size 4/4 but their valve sections (the GENUINE ones, and not the German copies) feature a quite-small c. 5/8" / 16mm / 625" bore.
I also need to fabricate a replacement detachable right hand rest for it as well.

When I think of HoJo, for some reason, I think of this clip
You see him back there?

Can't tell from that distance - could be either one

Good interview with him that I came across a few months ago.
So many cool stories but it's crazy that he talked with John Lennon the day he got shot...

Here's an update! Apparently Howard is NOT in hospice, and his condition is unchanged since 2016. Not going to remove the thread because of all the love shown to HoJo here
