Sound:
- This is a large 5/4-size recording bass. The overall sound and response is very similar to the old model King 1241/2341, but a bigger sound. If the King is a 4/4, this is a 5/4.
- The scale is as good or better as any 3v American-made recording tuba, IMO.
- I have received several compliments about the sound of this horn.
Mechanical Condition:
- Valves: As you can see from the pictures the valves still have a decent amount of plating on them. The action is very smooth. The valves have good compression.
- Slides: The slides all move as they should, some are a little stiff. The upper first valve slide is smooth enough to adjust for tuning as you are playing.
- Leadpipe: The leadpipe on this horn has a couple of small dings that do not affect the playability.
Cosmetic Condition:
- There is evidence of prior repairs, lacquer wear, dents, scratches and dings. The most notable dents are pictured.
- The lacquer finish is worn and shows areas of discoloration.
- The bell was stripped of its lacquer by a prior owner. They did an okay job, but there are still areas with small bits of lacquer hanging on. It was badly stained and tarnished when I got it, so I polished it. As shown in the photos it should age (patina) nicely and match the finish of the rest of the horn more closely.
No case or mouthpiece is included. Takes a standard American shank mouthpiece such as a Bach 18 or a Conn Helleberg.
