Re: tie wire
I've got a spool in my garage.. tag say "soft black annealed 16 gauge tie wire" Don't know of a PROPER name Being an non-expert I found that aircraft stainless lock wire in smaller gauge (0.020") works really well. It is thin enough that if I over tightened it it would snap before denting anything ...

Re: This band is one of my regular repair customers.
I remember being a high schooler and playing the euphonium solo for the March. Those G's were so easy in practice but absolutely terrifying on stage. I am pretty sure I fracked it the first go round. I also remember thinking that Song of the Blacksmith would be so easy if Holst wrote it on the ...

I am sure it is a wonderful tuba but £1,234,567 seems a little dear. /s

Re: breathing
Yeah .. Absolutely no need in any music I play! When I was struggling to play a Bordogni etude (#14) one octave down.. James did it two down and it still sounded clear and forceful. So I set an arbitrary goal to try to get there. Whether or not I ever do... working down there has helped my playing ...

Re: breathing
The gentleman I take lessons from is displeased with my breathing, or lack there-of. He suggested the Snedecor Low Etudes, as well, and I started working on Etude I a couple weeks ago. I'd never played them before and I've rarely had cause to play much of anything that low. I made myself so dizzy ...

Re: Macy’s Pipe Organ
It is the Wanamaker Organ ... It always had and always will be .. Macy's organ?... Yeah no https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanamaker_Organ Used to go every year as a kid with my family for the Wanamaker's. Christmas light show and the Organ featured heavily. When I was in high school I saw a special ...

According to the old MW catalogs... my model 20 is a symphonic tuba... that's better than a concert tuba right?

Re: Open bass trombone
Vincent Bach has made quite a few model 50's over the years. A model 50 - without any letters after the number 50 - is just a regular bass trombone with nothing hooked onto it. Been doing some searching and can't find anything on a straight model 50. Not listed on Bach Loyalist. Anyone have a ...

That has been up for a long while, it has been in my ebay watch list for at least a few months. I am very surprised it hasn't moved... local pickup only but it is only 1/2 outside Oakland California.

Re: Screw-On Bell to Fit Tuba in Small Car
I have a small contra bugle in BBb (purchased from arpthark ) that has a screw off bell. It seems pretty robust... but the configuration doesn't really seem to save a lot of space. I am not really sure what the design intent actually is (maybe easier repair on bottom bow???). The brace between the ...

Re: Tuba Quartet and Bass Guitar
I would get someone to play on an amplified double bass. More flexibility. Having a mix of bowing with classical and jazz pizzicato.. would be cool.

Re: iPad revisited
As much as I hate to admit it bloke for have s point about scanning in paper charts and scores. I hate having to read scanned music on the tablet. One of the members of our group is a talented arranger and does all of our arrangements. For the few older charts in our library the he has re-engraved ...

Re: iPad revisited
That's true. I did a sub gig once and a couple of the tunes just said "fake" and I wasn't told ahead of time that I needed a Real or Fake book so I didn't bring one. So someone shuffled a book down to me so I would have the tune in front of me. Those tunes.....weren't great....especially when they ...

Re: iPad revisited
I agree with bloke in that I would rather play off paper.. however I think this discussion really only pertains to playing set programs with a relatively small number of pieces in an indoor space... like an orchestra or wind band. For the me the iPad is a lifesaver. The primary group I play in has a ...

Re: fads
So why not just get it now? Finances for one.... I mean they are priced really well.. but we did spend $5K on a BBb 186 two years ago (Granted it is a really really good BBb 186 and my daughter will use it in a few years). Plus there are a bunch of other expenses right now... Secondly the Professor ...

Re: fads
I really wish these tubas came up for sale in a year or so, instead of now... (For the seller's sake I hope they move well before then). My son will be looking for a good CC for university and I would love to see him end up with one of these instruments. He plays on a BBb 186 now and got very ...

Re: Some orch. rep for 2025...
Is there a full orchestral version of Folk Song Suite? I thought it was just for chamber. The instrumentation in the original is interesting - from Wikipedia "The part for B♭ baritone or euphonium in the more modern publications was actually for a baritone saxhorn, and this part disappears from l ...

Looks a lot like the ones on my Holton Collegiate Sousaphone. I can do a better comparison when I am home tonight. Here's one in reverb... but it is hard to zoom in. https://reverb.com/item/37249961-holton-collegiate-bb-sousaphone-1957 Edit: Here is mine... The bore is a match and so are the looks ...

Re: $500 1946 Silver “Naked Lady” Conn 20J
Are you using a single Conn Sousaphone bit?... My 20J no longer requires alternate fingerings after the leadpipe dents were removed and when played with a bit in the receiver. It makes s great lap sousaphone.
