Re: Question - Expanding a tuning slide

If someone does use one of those expander tools - which is likely what you will choose to have happen, I would hope that they would do what I do when compelled to use one of them, pick only one of the two inside slide tubes, and render it very subtly barrel-shaped, so it's not made too large on the ...

Tim-bits band (for the really little kids) hahaha
Midget band
Junior varsity (JV) band
Varsity band

The middle school band should be "Little Brass-Tards"

Re: New to doubling on Baritone

there are a few spots I'm just not going to play, I cant hit much above Eb over the staff. So I'll be hammering a handful of sections and that will be it. All that being said, I had fun. It is really challenging and I'm glad to be doing it. For the low brass choir I play euphonium in, the arranger ...

I've been to a video game jazz jam on a college campus. It was a ton of fun. There is a huge monthly one in NYC that gets a bunch of musicians and a huge audience.

Adam Neely did a nice YouTube highlight on his experience at one

Re: bloke's (rude as hell) selling tips

How about: If I am looking at an instrument that needs cleaning or minor repairs, I am mentally deduction 1.5X what my repair guy would charge from the price I am willing to pay for the instrument. This is a rule of thumb that has worked well for me (being that I have never purchased a new or even ...

Re: Schlipf mute fit for MW Model 20

I see the Miraphone 186 listed at Nr. 5. You could always email Herr Schlipfinger and ask: https://www.tuba-mute.com/?page_id=198 I am assuming, maybe erroneously, that that is for the modern 17.75" (450mm) bell 186. I should have brought the Horn to MRWTEC and had Lee Stofer fit it out, but I had ...

Schlipf mute fit for MW Model 20

Does anyone know what size Schlipf mute would fit a Meinl Weston Model 20 with a 16.5" bell? It should be the same size for the old stovepipe style Miraphone 186 which also had a 16" bell. I found these size charts, but don't know enough about the specs on the listed models to extrapolate https ...

Re: brake fluid

A shop air powered vacuum brake blender was really handy to have around... back when I had time and money to own and with on old cars. Oh and when my bones could handle being contorted into strange shapes for hours on end.

Re: brake fluid

A friend of mine, who is a big model builder, tasted of a few products to get epoxy and laquer model paints off injection molded plastics. Methylene chloride melted the plastic (as expected). Brake fluid took several days to soften model paints. He settled something called Testors Easy Lift Off ELO ...

Re: Felts do matter

Can someone explain the proper way to take measurements to align valves without a borescope or visually checking? I don't have one of those long brass tools, but can make one. I bought a $15 endoscopic camera off Amazon a while ago for trying to retrieve a ring from a shower drain without tearing ...

Re: Tube to tube braceless joints

If it were designing the joint... I would specify a double flange made by silver soldering two thin sheets together. Then burnish to match the curvature and soft solder in place. I understand why no one does that.. it would cost 10X versus the braceless joint and requires someone with a lot more ...

Dave Werden had a nice essay looking at the differences between American Euphoniums, British euphoniums, and British Baritones.

Re: Beginner advice

Engineer here: find a teacher who actually plays the tuba. Shouldn't that be, find an engineer who plays the tuba to teach you. According to some students... My PhD in engineering means that I think at too high of a level to actual be able to teach. By that logic.. being a barely passable tuba ...

Re: New to doubling on Baritone

I did that a few years ago for a couple of seasons. All I can say is that once you find a horn, get a Wick Ultra 6 in the shank size that fits the horn (BBB "baritone" for American instruments, "euph" if it is an upright bell euph that is modeled after a Besson or equivalent). The Wick Ultra 6 is ...

Re: Beginner advice

I would recommend finding a teacher. I never had lessons when I was learning because my family simply couldn't afford them. Then after high school I kept playing as a hobby and was always OK enough to get by with the kind of playing I was doing, so I didn't seek one out. . Now that I am almost 50 I ...

Re: Transposing question kinda?

What bloke is 100% true for accomplished/professional tuba players. Most community band, high school, amateur, etc tuba players are going to have a much smaller usable range. In that world I very rarely see parts below Eb1 or getting as high as Bb3/C4. Personally F4 for me is really rough or hit and ...

If someone is going to give me a price break.. I would rather take it to my guy and make sure it is done right.. I'm going to be bringing anything I buy in for chem clean and check out anyway.

I might be in the minority on this though.
