Re: Stop feeding the beast!

Very sorry and not surprised. There was no penalty for the owners of the four pit bulls that tore me up.

A dog attack is the same as a crazy guy stabbing you with a knife (I had four). One would think it would be taken seriously.

Re: Sometimes it's the horn's fault

When I taught elementary band, it was a matter of routine to test play each kid's horn. It was often revealing. When the horn was fine, it also showed the student the human factor of playing an instrument.

Re: Helene - everyone okay?

It's the deadliest US storm since Katrina. Terrible. I have been assigned to SC. What I have seen so far is a lot of this: https://tubaforum.net/viewtopic.php?p=70783#p70783 Many residents have told me stories of how they just happened to go to the bathroom or fell asleep in the living room right ...

Re: stands

Anybody remember how many pro players used to be on the old forum? Yup, Bloke got rid of almost all of them. :smilie2: Did the pro players appoint you as their spokesman? Really, that comment reminds me of the "Nyah, nyah, nobody likes you!" kind of talk I've heard 8-year-olds say when they're ...

Would you mind posting a photo of that? I'm curious as to how Miraphone did the vents.

I really like mine, but it could benefit from a cut. Or a Mike Johnson leadpipe.

On my Martin Mammoth, that F is sharp. The E right below it is flat. The rest is very good.

I don't know if this is your provider, but their energy audit is free. I would bet it's a good source of info.

Re: worst paying college majors

It's a tough call about your house. It's so beautiful and full of character. Lots of space to work and play, but lots of volume to heat and cool. An energy audit could identify the most cost-effective ways to reduce heat loss in the house. This new world of remote work has boosted the value of a lot ...

Re: worst paying college majors

Yep, that's me. But I've done just fine. I certainly don't ignore money, as it is a part of our daily life. But I know it is just a tool. As with any tool, it can be used wisely or misused foolishly. Also, just focusing on a tool and forgetting a larger purpose is a bigger mistake than not having ...

Re: Welp! I've gone and done it

I just recently started playing Eb tuba after playing euphonium since 1978. Eb is almost as nimble as a euphonium and still sounds tuba-ish. Lots of fun!

Re: for those pursuing performance degrees

I personally know some tubists, in prominent full-time orchestra and opera positions, who also have other businesses- welding, part owner of a coffee shop, instrument repair and sales. In my early years as a school band director, I delivered pizzas part-time. I was also a small-time landlord for 20 ...

Re: for those pursuing performance degrees

Your kids have done great, obviously with good guidance from their parents. Of course, nothing is guaranteed: the twists and turns of life are unpredictable. I think that, with a focus on eternity and how to live right, the material needs will be met. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your l ...

Re: for those pursuing performance degrees

My majors changed in decreasing order of practicality: First- Electrical Engineering Second- Music Education Third- Euphonium Performance (the planet's most unmarketable degree, especially for me as I could not join the military) I started in EE thinking I could make a good living and play music on ...

Re: tuba ownership / emotional attachment

I will never sell my 40-year-old Willson 2900 euphonium because I bought it from Brian Bowman while I was studying with him throughout high school. He picked it out from a batch of 14 and sold it to me at his cost. I hear the new Adams euphonium has better intonation, but I just don't play enough to ...
