Re: cost of brass stock
I've been exploring stainless steel as an option, and while a bit cheaper (perhaps $45 rather than $60), it's still a lot of money to burn, considering how many attempts it's going to take to converge on a decent mouthpiece. As such, I'm leaning toward 3-piece construction. It's possible to use much ...

Re: Mammoth Mouthpieces
I have always found double buzz, in a number of people, to be due to "wrong" leadpipe angle putting different pressures on the lips. It can be gotten rid of instantly by finding the right angle, by simply tipping the tuba both ways while playing the double buzz note, until the double buzz ...

Re: fractional tubas
No, those are threebas. And euphoniums are onebas.bloke wrote: Tue May 06, 2025 6:47 pm First of all, I think we need to reduce the fraction of 6/4 to 3/2, so the number more looks like 3.2 beer, (which is the type of beer that trumpet players probably drink). This way, 6/4 players can probably blend with the section better.

No, this one just came through The Mighty Quinn. I learned while talking with Chris Hite at Buddy Roger's about gig bags that the one you played was used at the NAMM show, so I'm not sure what mine was used for.Sousaswag wrote: Sat Apr 19, 2025 8:25 am Was this the one at Buddy Roger’s? That’s the one I played.

New Tuba Day
This week I bought my first CC tuba. Last year I started playing an EEb tuba (Yamaha 632SII), fell in love with its "singing" voice, and decided to start taking tuba more seriously. But I don't love playing my BBb tuba (King 2341) even though there's nothing "wrong" with it. It tends toward sounding ...

Re: Valve Oil Preferences?
I use Ultra-Pure. Incidentally, my most recent online order arrived yesterday, and it came from an Eastman address, which is a recent change if I remember my mid-2024 order correctly.

Re: Mouthpiece for my Eb
Ok, so far the choice seem to be either a Denis Wick 3L or a JK Exclusive 6.
For what it's worth, when I was testing mouthpieces on my Eb tuba, the 3L was terrible (weird uneven resonance), though the 2L was acceptable, and the 3SL was good.
You also mentioned the 24AW, which I didn't care for ...

This Yamaha YEB-632IIS tuba was new, though the actual NTD was a few months ago. I like my King 2341, but I love this tuba. Intonation is as good as for any valved brass instrument I've played, and it's easy to produce what sounds to me like a sweet, lyrical tone. Slots are well defined ...

Re: Daily Tuba Routine Post
In my experience, two activities stand out for which physical warmup is critical. One is rock climbing, which involves lots of static muscle tension in the forearms. The other is playing brass in the upper register, again with varying degrees of static muscle tension. Admittedly, tuba is the least ...

Re: Wick mouthpieces
I like the Wick range and now use a 2L on my EEb Tuba; for me the bigger cup energised the fourth valve range and gave a fuller quality to the sound, but YMMV.
This comment gave me an excuse to try a 2L as part of a broad search for mouthpieces that work well with my new Eb tuba (Yamaha YEB ...

Re: volume of sound in relation to size of tuba
Having spent most of my time playing euphonium, the vast majority of my tuba playing has been Bb, with a bit of C noodling. However, as mentioned in another thread, I recently acquired a 3+1 Eb tuba, and one of the big initial surprises was how softly it can play cleanly. I mean, it's controllable ...

Re: Wick mouthpieces
My assumption, not informed by actual experience, was that depositing a layer of silver over the gold would have adhesion issues. If that turns out to be incorrect, I'll probably give over-plating a shot. Meanwhile I have a silver-plated SM9 on the way... coming from Europe since I couldn't find one ...

Re: Wick mouthpieces
I had no idea that Denis Wick omits silver under the gold plating. That's terrible! Guess who's retiring a gold-plated Denis Wick mouthpiece ASAP.

Re: British baritone mouthpiece
I have played a Yamaha YBH-621S in a British brass band for a couple years now, and a year ago went on a mouthpiece discovery kick. My bias going into it is that I'm striving for a distinctly brighter sound than euphonium, which it seems may be less in vogue over the past decade or so; there is a ...
