Foot Pedals
Foot Pedals . . . (for iPad) . . . there are a lot of them.
Are the all essentially the same? Or is one of them super-duper?

Re: Replay of Carol Jantsch playing the new Wynton Marsalis Tuba concerto
I was at this performance and I liked the piece the first time I heard it. Now I’ve listened to the recording twice and it keeps getting better as I hear more things going on. Not that it makes any difference to the listener, but impressive nonetheless, is the fact that she played the entire thing b ...

Re: Transposing
Just out of curiosity, were the Bb charts in treble or bass clef? Treble clef tuba parts is Bb are quite common, but bass clef parts in Bb . . . well, I’ve never seen one.
If your Eb friend was playing a Bb treble part on his Eb, he was transposing.

Re: instruments setting out - at the ready
I leave them all out . . . except . . . a silver plated euphonium.
I don’t like silver plated horns because they tarnish. But the euph doesn’t tarnish as quickly if I keep it in the case.
A nuisance, but less of a nuisance than polishing.

Re: ' just bought four more gallons of ultrapure lamp oil...
I use lots of lamp oil, on the valves and inside the tubing. There is a downside: lots of oil going IN means lots of oil coming OUT. You have to be careful about where it is going. If you dump oil onto a dark stage floor it can be hard to see. People aren’t looking for it and it is slippery.

Re: Tuba stand
A few years ago Dillon Music had a rest like this but it was made of wood, not plastic. I just checked their website and it’s not there but if you call Matt I’m sure he will remember it and may be able to tell you how to locate one.

Re: Slide Lubricants
Adding a stop rod (as I’m not for much for those shoestring things) actually takes less time than aligning a slide. (I don’t have “loose fitting“ slides on my instruments, but rather “precise fitting“. I will admit that - when left in a really warm room - I’ve had a slide slip out once or twice over ...

Anyone ever played one of these?
Miraphone 56B Variously described as a tenor tuba or kaiser baritone Reason for asking: I'm looking for something that has a brighter sound than a euphonium. The Besson small-bore baritones are a bit cramped for my taste and I'm hoping a larger bore might be the ticket. Trying to decide if it's ...

Pistons are prevented from departing the instrument by threaded caps. What keeps the slides from going their merry way? Hup Easy. Just take the ends of the two tubes and bend them ever so slightly towards each other... :facepalm2: I guess you are saying that Bloke's considerable amount of time ...

Re: Your favorite music stand?
No doubt that the Manhasset regular stands are great. They can still function well after 50 years of normal use. The Manhasset Voyager is an OK stand, but the carrying case is not well thought out, and mine is beginning to wear at stress points. I think for my next portable stand I will look for a ...

The only real solution . . . is to perfectly align slides - both parallel and coplanar, and then fit the inside/outside slide tube pairs to each other as if they are pistons and casings. Pistons are prevented from departing the instrument by threaded caps. What keeps the slides from going their ...

I prefer a light grease to oli, on the theory that it is less likely to migrate to the valves.
In the past I have used silicone grease and it works fine, although no better than any number of other greases.

Re: New blood, Part 1 (Besson 983)
Are there tuning slides on any of the compensating loops? The 3rd valve has a tuning slide on the compensating side. However, tuning on any of the valves on the compensating side can be adjusted by either of the two tuning slides in the compensating loop (the 4th valve loop). This would most likely ...

Re: Tuba part for Rodeo
Thanks for sending. Just for your information, there are tuba parts for two movements, the other being Buckaroo Holiday (this part is actually much more interesting than Hoe-Down, at least for tuba). I am curious how you got to this part, since the log in prevented me from going to any other useful ...

Re: Tuba part for Rodeo
Not having seen the part, I went to the first rehearsal with my Eb, figuring it would be adequate, which it was. However, your recommendation for the big tuba is correct for sure.
