Re: Piston vs Rotors observation, and the dreaded low C

I played some of the new Lidl models today at Buddy Roger’s, and will post about it later. My point: The low C played just fine. I think design plays more into it than anything. Both models had the same body, and both had a perfectly fine low C. The newer instruments just have better designed bodies ...

Re: "I don't like pistons/rotors."

I like my rotors better now that they’re as light as normal rotors. I’ve complained on and on about Willson rotary tubas and actually did something about it. Your point about spring tension and weight is spot on for both valve types. My other previous rotary tubas? Never had an issue with the valve t ...

Re: Is there a real advantage to TUBA stand?

Unless it’s a bell front, all of mine live on their bells. Bell fronts have no other easy way to be stored other than flat across the floor which gets in the way.

Just leave it on the bell.

Re: JW York & Sons BBb Tuba--$2700

This tuba makes me slightly regret building a Holton 345… If I weren’t doing that I’d be on my way to Vermont. What a beautiful instrument.

That poor bell. Ugh. Hopefully it straightens out okay.

You’re a true Alexander guy now with that stable of yours! Congrats!

Re: Reverb: Hirsbrunner BBb (Yorkbrunner looking)

I agree Wade. Some of their newer models suck. Hb-21….. I loved that gorgeous Hb-2P I had for a while. Great design and tuba but still needed a bunch of slide pulling. This tuba I think I’d be willing to take a chance on but I always wonder how they get so much silver wear… What happened to some of t ...

Re: Reverb: Hirsbrunner BBb (Yorkbrunner looking)

For $6500 plus a grand or two in dent and repair work, someone could have a VERY nice Swiss-made York copy and still be under the price of an Eastman… Just sayin’…

Re: My Willson 3200RZ Repair Thread

Does anybody have, or know where to get… Rotor valve springs, about a half inch measurement per coil? Miraphone springs don’t fit this tuba, they’re too long. I’m trying to replace these old, heavy, bent springs with something newer and a touch lighter now that the valves themselves are lighter. Oh, ...

Re: My Willson 3200RZ Repair Thread

I did a little bit of quick research on that matter... By research, I mean I read through some posts on the trumpet forum. Some guys claim it cost them about $100 for Anderson's to do their trumpet in 2019... With no damage and bare brass as the result. I'm curious enough about this that I may reach ...

Re: My Willson 3200RZ Repair Thread

I do wonder now what Anderson’s would charge to just remove the silver… I wasn’t aware it could be stripped off, I thought only buffers or painstaking sandpaper would do it. Ah, well. Long in the future, maybe. With all the repair, soldering, dent work, crushing, etc, it looks like crap up close, but ...

Re: My Willson 3200RZ Repair Thread

I really wish this thing was just raw brass… So much simpler… I hate that this thing is silver. Everything else I have is either spotty lacquer or raw brass. Ugh. Time to pull out the vat of silver remover or get serious with a buffing setup...! Seriously. I’ll be honest with you, when I saw the ele ...

I really wish this thing was just raw brass… So much simpler… I hate that this thing is silver. Everything else I have is either spotty lacquer or raw brass. Ugh. I just got a “runner” in from Meinl Weston for my 2165… To the bill of $68.99. It’s for the eventual Baer 5th valve. That’s not bad at all ...

Re: My Willson 3200RZ Repair Thread

I’ll see what they charge me… Obviously guys I’m not trying to spend $1,000 on these things, but if they cost about the same as fixing what’s on it currently, I don’t really see the problem. Now, knowing what they charged me for a silly thumb ring, I have low confidence that’ll be the case, but we’ll ...

Re: My Willson 3200RZ Repair Thread

Right - so, if they need to be copied and will cost the same as new from the factory, then I might as well get them from the people who make them. If the factory can make them for what would be a new slide assembly, which they should be able to, then I’ll have them do that. He’s already got my 345 to ...

Re: My Willson 3200RZ Repair Thread

Yeah, just tubing.

The problem is, the tubing I’m looking for needs to be bent into very weird shapes. They’re the tubes coming out of the rotors that then connect to the outer tubes themselves.

While I could have some bent the correct way, others would be very challenging. I’ll post some pics later

Re: My Willson 3200RZ Repair Thread

I reached out to them directly and now SE Shires, who I had great luck with in the past, but they haven't responded to much of anything. Boo. Okay, well, hollering before I’m hurt, I guess! Looks like the Shires Repair department is under new management. That’s probably why it fell through the cra ...
