Re: odd things about (some really fine) wind bands

Well beyond all this, but in the same league when we are talking about wind bands:

How about the self important MC/announcers who drone on and on. In every wind band I’ve been in there is an announcer who opens the concert as well introduces every piece before it’s played and also closes the ...

Re: Bill Bell - NYP Archival Live Recording

Thank you for sharing this. I too, wore out the Bill Bell and His Tuba cassette tape.

I performed a MUCH MUCH more conservative and straight version of this when I attended the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing arts back in........I guess it was 1996. We dressed up and had a ...

Re: Bill Bell - NYP Archival Live Recording

I like this version a bit better than the version on the record.

The record is interesting, but IMO some of the artistry is a little obscured by the hokey/somewhat rinky-dink backup band. Lots of xylophone!

Now I remember the record version - you can’t miss the xylophone - especially back on ...

Re: Bill Bell - NYP Archival Live Recording

Gosh I hadn’t heard Bill Bell playing that in decades. Back when I started playing in 7th grade my private lesson teacher gave me the LP “Bill Bell and his tuba”. I wore that record out. That was one of the pieces on the album -although I seem to recall it was just a piano accompaniment. Bell seems ...

Re: Gene Pokorny recital USC February 24th......

Today I learned Tommy Johnson’s first gig was playing Tubby the Tuba for the Disney Movie and that’s when he decided if he was going to be a tuba player or work for Goodyear Rubber Company. :teeth:

In the middle there is an unexpected Buddy Rich reference. The first part of the video is a good ...

When the time comes, it's unlikely you would be in a position to do this, and I don't even know if it is feasible. That would be -- take it to a conference (or get someone else to) and sell it there. Play testers galore, and one would possibly fall in love.

Every dopey kid is going to want to ...

I’d also add - try to fly off hours. Red Eye flights tend to be less frantic, less likely to be at max capacity and flight crews tend to be less stressed and more flexible.

You could also get a giant yellow reflective vest to wrap around tuba with the words Emotional Support Tuba on it in high ...

Re: Tariffs - what's the skinny on Chinese built tubas?

I'm already hearing Tariff horror stories, but none involving tubas. Wessex ships from England. Will U.S. Customs go through a Wessex or Eastman shipment, to see where the horn originated? Will this be a death-knell of Chinese tuba sales in the U.S.?

Tariff applies to country of origin and not ...

A friend of my son was given a brand new CC Miraphone 185 by her parents... It was a complete and total surprise to the young lady .. they ordered it based on the recommendation of the Music and Arts sales guy, without discussing it with her or her teacher... on the basis that it would be a good ...

I’ve decided now to forgo the music and stand issues. I’ve elected instead to go full Milli Vanilli and from now on will be Lip Syncing all outdoor performances. This will also allow for elaborate dance maneuvers with horn. Twirling & twerking have not been ruled out! :gaah:

Remember, all the other brass organizations...Trumpet, Horn, Trombone.. are Int'l to be inclusive.

Re: Why should or shouldn’t I renew my ITEA membership?

For me after being a member for well over 25 years the break point was changing the name from TUBA.

There was a vote on the name change from TUBA to ITEA. The vote totals were never released (what does that suggest) and the name was changed. That is when I dropped my membership.

Re: Are you using your F tuba to play anything other than gypsy violin solos these days?

My Alex F has been getting a lot of mileage lately with a klezmer band. Punchy enough to provide a nice bassline and then also lyrical enough to take a few of those Gypsy violin solos over the changes every now and then.

To answer your question, maybe once or twice a month or so, for a couple ...
