Re: Mock Audition Committee Poll

I would think the purpose of a mock audition isn't so much the results but the experience. Waaaay back when I did auditions, they were in person for the conductor of the orchestra, not a committee behind a screen. So the thing I would want them to get used to was playing in circumstances that were ...

Re: odd things about (some really fine) wind bands

On intonation in amateur bands: I have yet to see it taught. I see it complained about and lectured about, but never taught. As if it were some kind of mystery school and if you would JUST DO IT it would be fine.

Re: Buzzing practice – how much is too much?

Hey all,
I've been doing buzzing exercises on my mouthpiece almost daily before I pick up the horn. I usually go for about 10–15 minutes, but lately my lips feel a bit fatigued before I even start playing. Just wondering—how long do most of you buzz, and do you ever skip it altogether? Trying to ...

Re: What did you play today?

I am playing (seriously practicing) oboe and Ehorn. Because I have an offer of a place in a concert band on both instruments next fall if I can get myself into good enough shape. It is a hands problem; for many months the neuropathy was so bad I couldn't feel the keys (but could still whack away at ...

Re: Mammoth Mouthpieces

My same horn-playing friend who went to music school in her 70s, was one of the ones who got a sudden double buzz and was flummoxed. I told her the leadpipe angle thing, she got back to me a week later and said thank you, she had changed the leadpipe angle for some ergonomic reason, and when she ...

Re: Mammoth Mouthpieces

I have always found double buzz, in a number of people, to be due to "wrong" leadpipe angle putting different pressures on the lips. It can be gotten rid of instantly by finding the right angle, by simply tipping the tuba both ways while playing the double buzz note, until the double buzz disappears ...

Re: My Holton 345

When the time comes, it's unlikely you would be in a position to do this, and I don't even know if it is feasible. That would be -- take it to a conference (or get someone else to) and sell it there. Play testers galore, and one would possibly fall in love.
With the bills pressure, gee I dunno. What ...

Flying tubas

I have questions about this; I know it's been done successfully, remember the picture of LeMark with his NStar on the plane. And someone mentioned it recently. Of course you have your own fare as well as that for the tuba, but you'd have to be going wherever it is anyway; not like a seller can buy a ...

Re: Martin mammoth -- how much?

I’ll give ya about tree fiddy for it.

Seriously though it might be a good idea to ask the shop that’s doing the work on the tuba to give you an estimate rather than opinions here. Or call a reputable repairman or someone who knows the value of the instrument to give you clarity.

Shop is a ...

Alex F is listed both here and on Phoenix craigslist. Like new condition, gold brass, left hand 5th valve. It is at my house for playtest and pickup, in Tucson.

Re: What make and model of tuba should I buy?

In fairly recent memory Dillon had a new 185. Reports of people who play tested that one said it had pretty severe intonation problems. A 188, they should have no trouble selling though, and hopefully lesson learned by the parents.

Martin mammoth -- how much?

This instrument is in for cleaning. It turned out to have quite a signifcant bash in the bottom bow, with duct tape on it. I'm told it plays fine, and we have decided to just clean it and let the new owner decide about fixing the bow.
Once again asking about fair market value, as there aren't a lot ...

Re: Latzsch cimbasso

I have great curiosity about these but it will not be satisfied in any way unless I have a previously agreed upon long gig needing a cimbo, which clearly isn't going to happen for a number of reasons. I don't think there even IS a cimbo in the entire city of Tucson, although there might be one in ...

just for the record, if I were going to play gypsy violin solos, it would be on a violin.
