Meinl Weston valve rattle

Post by karituba »

I just acquired a student line Meinl Weston 3 valve tuba. Plays great.. but there is a rattle INSIDE the second valve. I can take the stem out of the valve and when I shake the valve it sounds like a rattle coming from inside. What are my options for repair??? It's a beater of a tuba that sounds amazing.

Previously, the #2 piston stem broke off.
In the process of attempting to extract the stub, someone accidentally allowed the stub to screw inward, and fall into the hollow of the piston body.
If the rattle bothers you, shake the piston violently until you temporarily lodge the stub inside the hollow part of the piston, flood the piston interior (though the female valve stem threads - and avoiding getting any glue on those threads) with super-glue, and let the super glue dry.
Hopefully, you will have super-glued the stub into the place where it is lodged.
Restore the stem (as you will have removed it to pour glue down inside), put everything back together (possibly chip some drained-out super-glue from around the bottom of the piston) and enjoy playing with a rattle-free #2 piston.
