Nice Playing horn too! Feel fortunate I pulled the trigger on this one. I grew up in Michigan and have been looking for a York. The fact that this was made during the Spanish Flu pandemic and I'm play it it during the COVID pandemic gave it a nice symmetry for me as a family med doc. I do think it's a 33 but I haven't seen any 33's in the catalogs with the 4th valve. The only two quirks I've noticed is that I do think it's a bit flat over all (at least by TE tuner) and the main spit valve is a tight location.

I am one who loads up instruments with water keys, whether they are instruments that I built out of old tuba parts for myself, or whether they are factory-built.
I own an eastern-German factory-built tuba that now features five water keys, and a nearly 65-years-old UK-built tuba that features six. My Buescher helicon featured seven, and the compact B-flat Holton tuba that I’m building (thread in another forum…currently set aside to work on others’ instruments) will feature five.
I understand that some people believe that these things disrupt the airflow in wind instruments, and actually remove all of them. Truth be told, there is very little airflow in wind instruments, and even with the most gadget-laden trombones - that go to great lengths (pun intended) to avoid “tortuous bends”, there are still tortuous bends… and every one of those tortuous-bends-avoiding trombones features what...??
a water key 🤣

Very nice Doc, congrats. Yes, that is a model 33. The fourth valve was an add on option, rather than a separate model number I believe.

Here's a close of the engraving for Three Valves. I'll try to get some video up at some point.

This actually brings up a question that maybe I should post in the main forum, but what are the recommendations of when/if I should get a horn like this fully restored?

What would you like the basis for such a recommendation to be? Economic?

I believe I've read many times here about tubas that were taken to pieces and more carefully soldered back together, making much better playing instruments. Sometimes with changes to bracing.

How do you know it ain't broke?
