I did get a wonderful beuscher eb from that guy, great silver plating. Valves were worn, but what do you expect from a 110 year old instrument.

Every time I look at eBay, I have to wonder why I complain about trash being overcharged like this, when so many people are willing to overpay.

I think it's worth that much if he needs parts and valves. There's no way he's going to fully restore that.

From casual examination of the photos, the leadpipe and valve tubing is in pretty good shape. I'm kind of short on tuba storage space here, or I'd be kind of wishing it were coming to me - wouldn't it be a kick in the pants if it turns out good enough to play in public?

Funny thing is my 12J was a heap when I got it. I had another donor horn where the main bugle was in much better shape, but the guy who fixed it decided to pull the dents instead. I stripped the lacquer, and the thing plays pretty darn good. It's been used in a number of high profile gigs.

I got a better deal for it, though. I just got lucky.

That 1971 Mirafone 186 BBb I picked up from Tabor as a box of parts for a project ended up becoming one of the best CC 186s I have ever played. It was full of holes and cracks, but I restored and repaired everything as best I could and then cut it to CC.

You never know how a pile of parts will turn out until it is all fixed up.

Not my idea though, of course, to cruelly impose on an instrument repair professional to restore this tuba to its original contours. I'd play it the way it is (plus valve button.) You know those dents are just cosmetic. Well, mostly - there could be some slight detriment there, that a very discriminating ear might pick out. But why would anyone like that be listening to a tuba?

You know, a local buddy of mine cut his teeth on brass instrument repair by buying trumpets and horns in this kind of shape, repairing them, then selling them for a modest profit on Craigslist. He's now one of the better brass repair techs in the area.

I thought about doing that, but this house has little extra space for more tools, and no work bench.

I work outside. To be honest, though, I did build a workbench to fit in the small space I have in one of my rooms. I just can't use it very often. So I do about 90% of my work outdoors in the heat or cold. It is a huge problem, but I still manage to get a lot of stuff done at a pretty consistently high level.

I didn't buy this one but I get a lot of stuff from this seller. He used to be called 'Middleton Recycle'. He canvases schools and buys beaters by the truck load. This particular horn is easily worth it just for the parts if you are into rebuilding King 1240/41 and 2340/41 tubas. He is a square shooter and will answer questions. If I would have bid on this horn my only question would have been "are there any cracks or tears in the bell". I all the bell needed was to be rolled out.... I might have bought it just for the bell, pistons, and slide sets.
