Interesting 6/4

Post by LargeTuba »

I know this was built by Norm Epley, but I was wondering if any of you have tried it? I’ve heard Martins cut to CC bad.

That thing has been for sale for quite a while now. I bet it actually plays okay with intonation average for the genre. This might be a case of ergonomics.

That's been for sale for like 2 years or something.

I've talked to Norm about it, and forget exactly what he said. Something like it's a pretty decent tuba, ergonomics aren't as good as they could be, and the price is too high. Something else, but I forget.

I've talked to a few folks and Norm about this horn as well. It apparently has surprisingly fewer intonation issues as other ill-fated Martin cut jobs, but, as mentioned here, the ergonomics are allegedly a nightmare. I'd love to play it out of curiosity. I know Martin made at least one CC mammoth work (it's a 4 valve rotary) and I'd love to get a chance to see it in person, if only to take some detailed measurements.
