HEADS UP TEASER: amazing satin silver PAIR of Conn/Pan American BB-flat/E-flat tubas to be offered for sale

Post by bloke »

Both need just a tiny bit of this-and-that, but both are NEARLY ready to list for sale.
The E-flat has a remarkably good condition (albeit King, and very slightly too large) "period" hard case to go with it.

Both feature sturdy strap rings, are lightweight (for their respective lengths) and would make GREAT "gig" (dixie/polka/marching/ethnic music/etc.) tubas.

Both offer A=440 tuning.

Them pictures be mighty fuzzy. What does the Eb weigh, how is its intonation, and I can't even see how many valves it has but assume three, with very usable false tones down below. ??

I'll replace the fuzzy picture with a clear one, when they are both sell-ready. :smilie8:

- The E-flat barely plays up to A=440, but has TONS of slide ferrule material to remove (seemingly, factory-added to make it a "low pitch" version). Once I shorten the main slide's ferrules a bit (leaving the tuning RANGE the same) and put a shine on it, it will be ready to offer for sale. It plays "pretty well" in tune...' way better than most of the "monster" E-flats. It's small, as well as lightweight. GroovinLow (probably misspelled his username...), here, has an identical instrument that he uses professionally, and refers to it as his "parlor tuba". Oddly, there is no engraving...(??), but I recognize it as a Conn/Pan American as these have been through my shop several times in the past.

- I want to go over the B-flat one more time, and (now that I have it shined up) want to remove (having revealed themselves upon cleaning off the tarnish) just a few more shallow pings that I'm able to address.

Thanks for clicking !

My very first tuba was an old Eb Conn/McLellan that had a huge bell, a wonderful mellow tone, and with the small shank mouthpiece provided with it, impossible to play in tune. The high range was sharp compared to the low range, and of course vice versa. Could not find a place to tune it so that both ends would work. Otherwise it was really quite nice. As you know, Bloke, I still want a tuba and have pretty much settled into Eb as my choice. A light weight enough one that plays in tune with a standard shank mouthpiece (I gotta use my PT64) would likely find a home here. We have a local pro who plays something similar to this and he does not appear to pull slides, so there must be something out there that does work. One can only lip so far before it jumps partials, if it is far enough off.
If you had a blokepiece that worked on it and *you* could play in tune w/o pulling slides, I suspect I could too.
My other option is when the Wessex Bombino comes back but I suspect that would be too heavy.

I had one of those Eb models gifted to me when I was a teenager. Fun little horn to play. Sadly it was stolen out of my house in college. That is a perfect horn for stolling/standing gigs. It has been nearly 30 years since I played it, but, if I remember correctly, the intonation was pretty darn good.

The E-flat (even with a mouthpiece inserted) is barely over 11 lbs.

Both will be displayed with focused pictures, and "officially" offered for sale VERY shortly.

prices (for each/either) will be in the $XXX range.
