Buescher Short Action Sousaphone

There was a thread a long time ago on the other board about a Buescher with these double-ported valves - I think the pictures are still on horn-u-copia. Anyway, here's the only other example of these strange piston valves I've seen.

Cool! If long ago < 6 years, i may well have participated in the discussion. I do recall one such sousaphone on ebay during that time (and a month or so prior and far more entertaining, an auction for just a set of pistons for these!). If long ago > 6 years then i probably had nothing to do with that thread. And seeing as subject tend to be recurring after a fashion, i wouldn't be surprised if threads existed of both types.

I will pester the seller (i believe i've bought an instrument or two from him) as it is strange that he's put a question mark by the Buescher...

And it is likely, but not certain that it's Buescher... It could also be Pedler:

Or Art (the top one, and someone had a lot of fun with photoshop there!):

Although that is splitting hairs, as Art and Pedler were the same company with a Buescher in charge of the brass.

The Buescher short action trick, for those not seeing it, is that the tubing is split into two branches passing through each valve wherein the ports are now roughly the same diameter as a trumpet port lending to a similar length of action. It’s another somewhat clever idea but with too much manufacturing cost and additional maintenance issues.
