USSR Made Helicon

Post by James1350 »

Anyone have any clue as to the quality of these instruments, or the seller? Looks like a good deal, but I don't know how well instruments from the USSR tend to be.

This about sums it up. Generally, the main issue are the valves. They tend to not be fitted with precision. I had a friend in college that picked up a St. Pete in 1994/1995 brand new and it already had leaky valves.

I've definitely thought about it, but rotors cost $250 a pop. I think the risk outweighs the potential reward.

If anyone wanted to sell me 2 18mm valves for cheap, I would gladly experiment with this Russian Eb.

I wonder if more valves would improve it :smilie7:

Is there a particular listing we are discussing?

I got my first* Russian tuba yesterday.

My impression is it plays like something is stuck in the bell, and i assume that is because something is stuck in the bell.

I have been doing other things, so i haven't flushed it yet...

*- possible i got one already that doesn't play years ago and forgot in the intervening time as it rots in my attic equivalent.
