Perhaps it is on consignment? If that is the case then they are not allowed to touch it.

I've been told both "there's no money in new tubas" and "there's no money in used tubas." But more than that, there's no money in tubas that sit on the floor. It'll move quickly at that price to someone who doesn't care about the dent. Matt can do the work, of course, but how long would it even take to get to it? Cut the price and sell as-is.

They had a Conn 20J there for a while that had lots of dents. it was similarly advertised as not being de-dented, because the work would be more expensive than it's worth.
Yeah.

Dillon Music offers instruments and accessories at reasonable prices while being in a fairly expensive area to keep shop. Further, I always got the sense that Steve paid the crew reasonable salaries for the area, again, not cheap.

I won’t quote a price per hour for dent work, mainly because I don’t remember, but it’s not cheap but also a reasonable amount for skilled labor.

Again, they priced it fairly, and if someone is interested and reaches out, someone will be glad to quote them the cost to remove that dent and do so, once the transaction has occurred.

This, too! I’ve sold a few horns on consignment at Dillon’s. One of them, iirc, they bought after it sat for a while (it was a cheap old monster Eb).

Reminds me of that Scherzer CC that sat at Baltimore Brass for ten years. Looks like someone finally got it.

It wasn’t me, though a 5th valve might be nice sometimes. Crazy how long it sat there at $4000.

I know where a gleaming-only-mildly-dented one (with a good MTS case) is sitting in a high school with a 7-student (no tuber stoo-untz) band program.
Of course, it ain't for sale...

Neither has sold yet AND you don't know the profit margins on them.

Agreed.

One looks to be well used and a trade or consignment horn while the other is a demonstrator horn.

Those would have vastly different cost of acquisition for Dillon.

The newer demo one also has better lacquer and is simply newer. These are also important criteria for developing a price point. Not everyone is hunting for horns of a certain vintage.

They are within 2-3 years tops between each other. That shouldn't matter that much.

Okay.

Here’s what I saw…

Dent: 9031934
Demo: 9158814

I don’t know the serial number convention Miraphone uses now, but assumed there’s some age gap.

The dented one also has a lot of marks in the finish. This is pretty clear from the photos posted. Point in fact: these photos are about as good as one will find online in terms of resolution and quality of used tubas. Steve Ferguson is probably the best at shooting photos.

The key here is still what Bort stated, in that the acquisition cost of the horns is likely what’s driving the price. Both horns will likely sell, and I’d assume the dented one will sell first.

The one I bought privately that was seen on all platforms was 99% mint (until it was shipped). He started at 7k for over a month, then came down to 6k for another month then I offered him closer to the $5k range after roughly 75 days on the market. Regardless of worth, the market is still stuck right now on high dollar items (dented or pristine condition). The fact they have 2 of them is amazing and hell probably just froze over. My point is basically, if a super clean one like mine was on the market for a few months with no interest, the market is hurting..and if you're selling something it better be super clean AND a low price or..rough in spots and almost a fire sale price.

It's definitely a buyer's market out there and yes, the horn for $5300 is a great deal no matter what but you will be paying a boat load of shipping and tax on that as well from a retail store (minus any dent work you can't live without). Somehow this turned into a debate of something else..it was all opinion...rough out the one major dent and ask $1k higher and make it look more presentable is all and reflect that labor in your asking price. This is what businesses do for retail product marketing. (And stop F*^*ing marking King 1241's as 2341's, you know better!) Pet peeve, rant off....

They dropped the price on both their 187's. Maybe they read this thread?
