This was at a country club in Memphis on Valentine's Day, 2022.
The guy on the left is the banjo player. He rarely brings his tenor guitar to quartet gigs (as his banjo functions as the drums, in very small ensembles), tours with Billy Dean, and is a commercial real estate mogul.
The next person (horn guy) had throat cancer (cured), had a large benign tumor under his tongue (removed, but subsequently had to have a ton of tooth implants put in - as that tumor had contacted the roots of quite a few teeth), and plays ALL brass (except tuba), ALL single reeds + flute, piano, bass, and drums (brought trumpet/tenor/clarinet/flute to this job, and sang one number). He played in the Air Force for a few years, taught junior high band for a few years, and - after that - just decided to play music and do nothing else. He built himself a very nice house (with no mortgage), added on to it later, goes on fishing trips in the Gulf, and put his kids (five daughters) through college.
The piano player is about 85, (sadly) is going deaf, and plays an hour of tennis every morning. Formerly, he did a tremendous amount of cinematography work throughout North America (movies, national TV ads, etc.). He was born in Holland, and he and his little friends (during WWII) would - running across the streets, between buildings - play "dodge the Luftwaffe's 13mm bullets" (yes, really).

Re: being paid to goof around with my friends
Jim is gifted in the looks dept., and tends to compliment his nice clothing choices.
Here (just found on the web) is Jim with his own band, covering piano, tenor sax, trombone, trumpet, flugal horn (and - unless they were mostly hired to play top 40 oldies, etc. - probably the flute and clarinet are below the picture's "see" level).
