slide moves out while i'm playing

i've had this 186 a few days and i'm still learning the quirks... i've noticed that the 2nd valve slide moves OUT while i'm playing. what would cause that? i can't see anything in the slide?

Most likely, it's a loose fitting slide that would benefit from a thicker slide grease (Hetman Slide Gel, Slide Gel Plus, or similar) or correction of fit. That may involve re-rounding the inner tubes or tightening the fit by expansion.

I did have that experience with a euphonium! You may be correct. It just doesn't feel quite like that but is probably just not as loose. I have some thick grease from the euph, I'll give it a try. Thanks for jogging my memory

Of course, it’s also easy to mess up a perfectly aligned slide - to make it stop doing that, but - rather than that…
If I had a #2 slide that was aligned that perfectly (and it’s a little bit rare, because of how much those 186 slides are soldered into place) I might be tempted to add a #2 slide trigger, as those triggers are not that complicated to install, and it’s always nice to be able to dial in the 2-4 combination.

the hetman's 8 helped a great deal but it is still sliding out a little...

there are a few notes that play FLATTER than i would like... i can't tell for sure yet if it's ME because i haven't played in ages, or the instrument is built that way.

i have read, but forgotten that there ARE some pitches that come that way on the 186 and have to be compensated for...

the instrument has a date at the repair shop first of April... maybe that will help... i'll have the look and make sure the valves are set right and there are no leaks, but i don't think so, the compression is great, i think. i hear the thump of valves sometimes when i press them... anytime i move a slide it causes a thump. they may need vents...

Learn the instrument (and your embouchure) before pondering triggers.

I agree with Joe that it would be a shame to upset good alignment. And expanders inevitable mess up the roundness of the tubing. Given that the second valve slide really never needs to be removed, use thick grease. If that doesn’t work, just clean what is visible thoroughly and slap a piece of tape on the backside of the slide where it’s not visible.

When you learn the instrument and come to think that maybe a trigger would be useful, you won’t have to undo what you did.

Run a medium-gauge copper wire around the #2 casing, bend the other end into a curve, and hook the inside of the pull ring.
That way, it could (later) be triggered - so that B and E can more easily be played in tune.

i may do that... for now i'm using a suggestion made about twine. it works... not too visible.
