case lining colors

I always thought that the royal purple velvet linings in oboe cases was classy, and the velvet (rather than plush) avoided depositing crap between the pads and their seats (clever choice of material as well).

My favorite color of Bach Stradivarius case interior was that (early Elkhart, and Mt. Vernon, NY) medium-blue color. When they went to poop brown and a poofy plush, I was disappointed.

The worst trendy case lining color was that (late 60's / early 70's) red-orange color used by a few manufacturers...cheap-looking, and just plain YOOOGLEEY.

Black is OK, and dominant today. I suppose I view it as neither pleasing nor displeasing, and (a plus) it's very easy to match, when there is a desire to re-block a (hard) case for a different model of instrument.

I like the medium-gray lining color (as well as the quasi-car-headliner-texture material) found in some of the nicer domestic-made bags.

Black is blah, but pretty much what you get most of the time these days.

I am also a string guy, and I remember some case color combinations I particularly like.
For example, in the violin world, it is common to have a choice of case colors on the non-student stuff, because case choice for a violinist is a personal thing. But I always loved the combination used on the original English “Hill Style” violin cases, brown exterior with olive green crushed velvet interior. Just something classy about that.

In the guitar world, there is a lot of love for the 50’s Gibson combination of brown exterior with a hot pink (!) interior that they used for early Les Pauls. Also, the yellow tweed cases for the early Fenders. They had red or dark orange velvet interiors.

I once set up a co-worker's daughter with a Reynolds Medalist trumpet...it had the familiar Olds Ambassador Gladstone-style case, but with all-black exterior and red interior. Not only did the trumpet play great, the little girl was thrilled to have such a sharp-looking setup.

I once played a school-owned Olds Ambassador euphonium with brown plastic Olds case lined with what looked like brown teddy bear fur. Despite frequent vacuuming, it always looked filthy. Yuck!

I once had a Getzen cornet with the same color scheme for the case, which I also thought to be classy.

I've since avoided Getzens with that case, though; Getzen quality control seemed to hit a low point in the era when that case was used. Both the Amado water keys fell off of my cornet; a bell brace also came loose, and the lacquer was sketchy--maladies also shared by other Getzens I've encountered with the green-velvet cases.

I liked their old-OLD Yamaha black WOOD cases with blue linings...
They held/hold up very well, and I keep my eyes open for them (but not to put Yamaha tubas in them).
The later brown bleach-bottle think plastic brown ones were/are only case-ish things...
...and the brittle-plastic things for the euphoniums (with the goofy proprietary hardware), well...

Royal purple is my favorite color, and looks great on the inside of a case. Most of those cases are pretty old, though. The really old cases seem to be green. For new cases, my favorite is the dark blue or a dark burgundy red. The bright red seems cheap. Black is pretty standard, but the worst is light gray.

I found this material years ago when I restored this vintage Buescher trombone case. I'm sure there were not a lot of choices at whatever shop was nearby. This seemed to fit my criteria. Looked vintage, with a cool flare, a nice but unusual color for a case - most importantly it was velvet. When did I ever have time to do such frivolous projects. The trombone itself is a work of art so I guess that's why I spent time on the case.

Now, I turned it into a Jazz Sign for my music room.
