FS: B&M Marzan BBb tuba! **SOLD**
For sale is an awesome Boehm & Meinl-made "Marzan" tuba. BBb slant-rotor 5/4 sized tuba. Excellent player! One valve is a bit sluggish and the whole horn would probably benefit from a bath. Valves are very good with good compression, no dents to speak of, lightweight (22 lb), ergonomic playing position, and top-action MTS for easy tuning! MTS has been lapped and moves with one finger. Comes in your choice of RB-SF bag in Black or Goetz bag in Navy Blue. $3300 + any shipping cost

Re: FS: B&M Marzen BBb tuba!
I can (almost) guarantee satisfaction. It really is a terrific horn!
I am planning to ship this in a Grand Wardrobe box. But... I could pick up this hard case and ship it in that. Not a long drive from where I am.

same type of sound as with the handmade Nirschl “4/4” (5/4) tubas, except even richer - because it’s B-flat

Not to take away from the calmness of this tuba, but it is "Marzan", not "Marzan".
I had a Marzan CC for a while. Great sound!

Wait a minute. I know how to spell Marzan and I spelled it correctly in my initial post. But the title is misspelled... beginning with the first reply... Yours.

It was misspelled in the original post, but I corrected it later on.

And for those that don't know, this was built by Bohm and Meinl (now = Nirschl) in Geretsreid probably around the early 70s.

Re: FS: B&M Marzan BBb tuba!
James Jenkins used a Marzan tuba of some variety in Jacksonville, until it was stolen.
Kevin Ladd used a Marzan CC from school through his time in the Syracuse Symphony and Baltimore Opera (both of which disbanded)
I believe some others have successfully used Marzans in professional settings as well. Mine had a GREAT sound but was said to be an early prototype... On which they hadn't yet really figured out the piston valve section angle.
I don't believe there was much difference in SOUND from piston to rotor Marzan, and mainly just in intonation between BBb and CC (advantage - BBb).
Anyway, these tubas are SOLID, and because they are a little funny looking, get the pass way more often than they probably should.

Yes, solid horn here! A beautifully made Boehm & Meinl tuba with typical German build quality.
It won't break my heart if I end up selling other horns and get "stuck" with this one!

From the looks of things, the link below might be accurate for overall dimensions and bore size of 0.750”. Does that page describe your horn?
https://simonettitubacollection.com/ins ... -4-rotary/
How is the low range?
Is there enough MTS length to get pedal C in tune or stretch to B natural? Do you need to pull some of the other slides down that there?
I am looking for something a little bigger than my current horn, a MW25 from the early ‘70s. The MTS location alone would be a huge win! Can anyone offer a comparison between the lovely Marzan and my MW25 from about the same era?
Thanks for reading my first post!

Re: FS: B&M Marzan BBb tuba!
The low range is awesome. That large bottom bow and bell help, I think. As for pedals, you are asking the wrong guy. On bass trombone, sure, they roar; but not on tuba. Maybe other players here who have owned a similar B&M, like Bort, for one.
And, yes, that horn on the Simonetti site looks almost identical. I know they had at least two styles of MTS. Both on top but with some differences, as in this case. I do have to say, having a MTS on top is... nice. I don't know why other makers didn't jump on that.

I was in NC a few weeks ago and saw that B&M in person. If it had ever been used, it sure didn't look like it.greenbean wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 6:30 pm The low range is awesome. Vince had some rationale for the top facing slide not quite working out, I think it was something like it was good for pulling, but otherwise left you with fewer slide pushing options...? Or that the slide movement later in the piping was different than just for one note... Or something. I forget. Didn't really make a lot of difference to me on my Marzan. It didn't need much of anything, except a little pulling because of 4 valve low range. Other than that, he said it played terrible when he got it... It needed a valve alignment. After that, it was great.
My Marzan was a piston CC prototype. Sounded great, played great, but they hadn't figured out the valve block angle yet. It was too horizontal, and caused pain when I held it.
Tom's Marzan has good ergonomics and all the benefits of a deaigned-in-BBb tuba. I think Marzan tubas are a great value.

Re: FS: B&M Marzan BBb tuba!
With the rotary Marzan, the shortcoming is that the slides for the valves all lie below the rotors. Great for collecting condensation, but not for tuning on the fly. With a 4v horn, you’re stuck with notes like, in the case of BBb, low Eb being a possible miss and certainly low Db. There simply isn’t enough range on the main tuning slide to accommodate those adjustments. The piston version restores access to some slides and helps out in the low register.
