I'm pretty sure that Europeans are attracted to round flanges because they're (not more difficult, but) easier to install neatly.
Simply, heat the center post, let the heat radiate evenly out to the edge of the flange (all the way around) and hit it with the solder when at the ideal temp.
Obviously, the socket solder joint is soldered AFTER the flange joint is soldered, yes...??

This is how I install all brace feet. The diamond-shaped ones require you to move the flame out to the two long ends once the center has been soldered down. I am always happier with how my diamond-shaped feet go on. I am much neater and faster with them.
My issue is coping with the wind or very high or low temps. I hate having to solder outside when it is below freezing because it is nearly impossible to keep the parts heated. Everything becomes a massive heat sink when it's cold. And the wind simply sucks to work around.
