Yamaha 661 CC tuba for Sale

Post by Mikelynch »

This is one of two tubas owned by a close friend who recently passed, and that I am selling for his family.

The 661 is now somewhat rare, but was highly thought of when they came out in 1984 (to '93). The are, to me, a Yamaha piggy, with an .812 bore and 16.5 inch bell. This one was purchased from a well-known professional player, but I will leave it to him to chime in, if he chooses.

This horn has clearly been played, though it is in good mechanical shape and has good compression. I used it on a couple of concerts 2-3 years ago. The finish also indicates that it has been played, as there are some scratches, and rough spots in the lacquer. I have tried to include close ups of some of the worst example defects in the finish. But to me the horn easily passes even a 5 foot test for cosmetic appearance.

The horn is in Austin TX, and due to time constraints, I am currently looking for a buyer who can pick up locally, and have tried to price the horn accordingly, at $3,700 (including a gig bag in good condition)

These are such cool tubas, imo. Great all-around kind of horn. Someone will enjoy this.

The 3J for sale is cool too. Man, I wish I had the want/need.

Ooh...I'm interested but not local. It's been 20 years since I've played one, no recollection of how "big" it can play. Sadly, I don't think I've ever played a good Piggy as a comparison point.

It looks so compact! And the slides are all easy to reach.

These are wonderful tubas. I never should have sold mine to Deanna all those years ago.

I absolutely love my 661. Mine is from this same vintage...upgraded Yamaha minibals, left hand 5th, and no bell stamp/engraving. I play it all the time...have used it with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Milwaukee Symphony, Florentine Opera, Chicago Philharmonic, the Wintergreen Festival and other orchestras. It just works and the trombone sections all love it. Its the most in-tune CC I've ever played. Maybe the most in-tune tuba?! I just used it on a faculty recital...had never used it on a solo...glad I did.

Hopefully many years from now, when I get to that point, it'll be the last tuba I own.

A few inquiries, but it's still here. If it does not sell first, the horn will relocate to Columbus OH in early June.

I hope there is someone out there looking for an all around C tuba with the sensibility to realize that you can’t do much better for this price.

Five valves, Piggy size? Yes, please.

Had I not just acquired a Cerveny Piggy and lived a couple thousand miles closer I would be all over this tuba.

Extremely interested in this horn! I am located in Akron, Ohio. When do you plan on being in Columbus? feel free to email me at jal280@uakron.edu, as I don't believe I can send a PM here, yet.

The 661 sold a few weeks, but I have been tardy in posting, due to my move. Thanks for the interest!

The 2J is still available, and is now in Columbus, OH.
