New Equivalent of Olds 099-4?

What JP, Eastman, Jupiter models compare?

Also, the idea of another Olds or Bach that doesn’t have shot valves and other issues is appealing, but I was curious about what is out there that is readily available. That way if timing and funding don’t line up with a vintage instrument, I would know what to explore.

Consider the JP 379B. I just bought one but haven't touched it yet. It's a relatively large bore 3/4 BBb which looks a lot like a Piggy. I'm expecting good things when it gets here.

I had the 3v version (1270) and while OK, it was nothing spectacular. I played it side by side with my Olds 099-4 and much preferred the Olds.

When I was looking for a horn I could bring into a large ensemble, I was looking for a 5J. I also thought it would be a good overall replacement for the 12J. I ended up with the Kanstul 900-4B, which is a huge horn, comparatively.

And I'm glad I did it. That 12J, after tweaks over the years, is perfect for commercial gigs, especially where I'm standing or strolling. It's super light and punchy, and I don't think a 4th valve would add any benefit for what I do when I'm playing the majority of my gigs.

That all being said, if I wanted to replace the 12J with a four-valve instrument, I'd go either 5J or a Yamaha YBB-621...but I think it's kind of a pricey horn for what you get.
