Rescued 2280
@LeMark I read that you put a flat step valve on a 2280. I just rescued a 2280 and I'm interested in that mod. Did/do you use any of the 4th valve tuning options? When do you use the 5th valve? How about the 3rd valve slide?

Re: Rescued 2280
Well, it's a euphonium, so there's a lot less of it. It's a rescue, so there isn't much lacquer, and maybe a couple of dents, and I only paid $250 for it, so don't expect a lot.

Re: Rescued 2280
I didn't like the tuning options using the swappable 4th valve slides. Very awkward. If I remember right, the 4th valve tubing protrudes over the top of the bell, which would keep me from putting it in a case or sitting it down on the bell. The spring loaded 3rd slide didn't help much.
I use the 5th valve the same way it works on a tuba. 4-5 for low Eb, 1245 for Db, 1345 for C, and 12345 for Low B. If and 2-4 fingerings are sharp, 235 also is an option

Ok, cool. sounds like it saves you from the flat F tuning so 4 can still replace 1+3. I've had a 2280 before, but just a loaner. I got fond of the Eb tuning because you could get the whole chromatic horn with only 4 valves, but you do wind up pulling that 3rd valve slide fairly often. I may still try that to avoid a 5th valve, or maybe until I get a 5th valve.
By the way, on a tangential issue, I'm admin on an unrelated phpbb board (https://cadforum.net/). What are you using for your thumbs up/thanks extension? We're using Post Love, and it has some features I'm not crazy about. We're also using a Best Answer extension, which might be useful here.

See what Steve Ferguson had to say about the (existing) tuning possibilities of the King 2280 euphonium.

Re: Rescued 2280
I really like the 2280. I tried talking Conn selmer into making a 5 valve version with a 12 inch bell and calling it a 2285, but they didn't take the bait.
I think when going head to head with Besson, willson, Adams or even packer, the sound isn't rich or british enough to ever be embraced by the professional community. Would a different bell help? I would love to find out.
There's a lot to like about it.
1. short, quick valves
2 very open, even in the low range
3. outstanding intonation
4. Taller body
5. price
6. all 4 valves in the right hand, which appeals to tuba players as a doubling instrument

Re: Rescued 2280
I've been exploring some alternatives, but have been coming up empty. It would be nice to just have a simple thumbs up (without all the extra features and complications). I'll check out the Best Answer one this weekend, and install it here for a trial run. Thanks for sharing it with me, I am not familiar with it!bone-a-phone wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 10:01 amLeMark wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 8:58 am I didn't like the tuning options using the swappable 4th valve slides. We tried the thumbs up that you are using, but went back to Post Love. Once you find all the settings to turn off all the bells and whistles, it's not so bad. That's the hardest part to me. Sometimes in permissions, sometimes in the Extensions tab, or maybe the General tab, and not necessarily labeled. Oh, the woes of phpbb admin.

Re: Rescued 2280
I was at Midwest years ago and asked about a front valve version. "Oh yeah, I think we're working on one." Sure thing... I saw a Yamaha 321/301 body (only) a few years back for $100, I thought with a King American baritone valve set (very similar size valves, so no huge step up) that it might be a fun horn.LeMark wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 2:55 pm I really like the 2280.
