When I finally get done with some other repairs and promised for-sale projects (currently on "the list"), I'm going to get a vintage Hirsbrunner euphonium slicked out for sale. It was gently used, but a couple of large solder joints partially failed (no denting anywhere) and virtually all of the parts (anything that removes without un-soldering) were missing. I'm wondering if it was military surplus, because I've purchased military surplus instruments like that before (whereby they rendered an instrument completely unusable - which was they only way they were allowed to surplus and replace it.
Anyway (back when Peter, Jr. was still actively in business and actually HAD vintage Nirschl valveset parts still in-stock) I bought ALL of the missing pistons, caps, slides, etc., for this instrument, but NEVER fitted them, and (well...) this thing has been sitting from even BEFORE our move to blokeplace.
NO...I'm not selling it "as is" (SERIOUSLY: no private messages re: "buying 'as-is', please), and I WILL get it turnkey and gig ready sometime this year, and offer it for sale. (I had thought that I would first wish to compare it to my currently-owned comp. euphonium, but - I'm in love with the HUGE (not just throat, but) entire bell on the one that I now have, and suspect I'm not going to wish to go back to "regular-big"...and I ALSO have a Yama-321 for "high" euphonium ("tenor tuba") stuff, so (again), I WILL be offering this one up and it WILL (when ready) be advertised - and (as always) here FIRST.
Anyway, the Vintage Hirsbrunner euphoniums (and I have no idea whatsoever about Adams...??) featured THREE interchangeable receivers:
- small/standard
- euphonium/Besson/vintage/intermediate/Willson 2900-size
- large
I got this with a "large" screwed in to the receiver-receiver, but that's ALL that I had.
Blah-blah - on eBay - has been offering the SMALL ones (for cheap), but no one wanted them.
I bought THREE of them, which gave me [1] a small, and [2] TWO chances to nicely ream another of the smalls out to the euphonium/Besson/vintage size.
...so (even though I'm not going to deal with this instrument, right now), I had the lathe fired up, today, mounted my smaller Jarno reamer, and converted one of the "smalls" to "intermediate" size.
pictured below are
- the reamer
- a vintage Besson intermediate receiver (for reference) fwiw, the exit bore is just about exactly 13mm...maybe a smidge larger...(??)
- a formerly small interchangeable Hirsbrunner receiver (converted to intermediate)
- an oem small interchangeable Hirsbrunner receiver
(The LARGE one is still screwed into the instrument's mouthpipe's receiver-receiver.
...so now (included with this instrument) will be ALL THREE of the receivers:
- small/standard
- intermediate
- large
Hirsbrunner euphonium interchangeable receivers
