I wish I could find one of those from cerveny's glory days.

I'm just curious, what changed and when? Was it a build quality issue? Materials?

All of the above. After the iron curtain fell, American retailers put pressure on cerveny to export many more tubas than they were previously, as alternatives to miraphone for the school market. (Chinese tubas were still tuba shaped objects back then, and st Pete was only sold by tuba exchange)

Quality fell like a rock, and right about when Chinese tubas started getting decent, King offered the newly redesigned 2341 as a good school horn, and cerveny was no longer in the discussion anymore for tubas that should be considered

They are supposed to be better now. I might have a chance over the summer to play some of the new models we'll see. I'm a huge cerveny fan, played them almost exclusively for the last 35 years, but only the ones that were made before 1989

I seem improvements (re: picture) over those which were the early post-S-arm ones.

I believe I also see a little hurtie....

Gotta give credit where credit is due - that masking tape over the spit valve is a big improvement over having no tape at all.
