RIP Michael Lind

Can't stress enough how many times I've used his recording of Carnival of Venice as a method to open a student's eyes to what the tuba is capable of doing. No excuses, no hesitation

I just heard about this... his Vaughan Williams and that of John Fletcher were always the benchmark for me when it came to that concerto. I'm saddened to hear of his passing.

Along with Hilgers´ "Tuba Tubissima", his album "Michael Lind plays Wilder, Danielsson, Arban" introduced me to what a tuba can do and were the first two albums I got upon changing from Flugelhorn to the Real Thing.

When I was a youngster Mr. Lind came to my school to do a recital. It was truly amazing. Afterwards I got to meet him. I was pretty wound up after hearing that great playing. When I stopped taking he said to me " I tell you something, you practice hard for 10 years you are going to be surprised how good you are. Great words from a great man.

While in grad school, I had broad library privileges and the UT-Austin music library had a lot of tapes and LP's that students could borrow. I borrowed a tape of Lind playing the Vaughan Williams (a Bis recording that was reissued on CD and now I have that). That became my benchmark for tone for works like that. And the Bis recording was just a lot better than the typical Crystal recordings that had formed most of the solo tuba recorded lit at that time. That was important stuff in the day. Lind was of that generation (along with Fletcher, Culbertson, etc.) who revamped tuba performance standards in Europe.
