I have used that stuff, and it does work. Actually it’s pretty convincing in its appearance, and would be much easier on a musical instrument than an actual hammered finish.
You’ve got me thinking about buying some of the bronzy-colored cans, and shooting it on my compact Holton.
I guess I should run a poll with the freak jury to discover whether doing that would raise, lower, or do nothing to its resale value.

I suppose the only other question would be how much effect it would have on how the instrument projects - when played in the Wiener Musikverein.

It seems like imparting the hammered finish would induce work hardening of the metal, which may be good, but I don't know enough about the process to really be sure.

Hammered paint finishes look great! They have been used on industrial equipment for decades - in combination with super-durable paints. My industrial sewing machines have it. And I think it would look great on fiberglass sousaphones!

...and I was joking about spraying it on a tuba, but now I'm not so sure that it's a joke.

- faux brass hammered-finish paint on exterior (perhaps with buffed/high-gloss bow ferrule lacquered-brass accents, as well as a buffed/high-gloss clear lacquered brass bell interior), and buffed/high-gloss clear lacquered brass slides (as well as - possibly - the engraved area on the bell). I'd probably also go ahead and do buffed/high-gloss clear lacquered brass on the bottom bow cap - as any (let's be real: LIKELY) scuffing would look more normal/natural.

Agreed. I made a wooden base for my bandsaw (I found it used without one) after restoring the saw. Hammered finish paint worked very well on the stand and covers over minor imperfections nicely.

I'd like to see a photo of someone's paint job with that Rust-Oleum stuff. The only one I could find when I looked yesterday, the result looked pretty much like any old spray paint, albeit maybe a little lumpy, which for me would probably help disguise painting flaws. I've seen plenty of textured finishes on old machines, and this was not that. But it was a video, so image quality was very low.

All of them looked fake/synthesized/disingenuous, EXCEPT for this picture which was NOT on a paint-buying webpage.
THIS - in my experience - is how this stuff turns out.
Now...WERE I to use this stuff, which would be more interesting:
- brass faux hammered finish (against bright clear-lacquered brass highlights/offsets, OR...
- some other color of faux hammered finish - ex's: bronze, antique bronze, etc... (against bright clear-lacquered brass highlights/offsets)

I was thinking more of a real green, but it's immaterial if you can't get the paint in that color. It looks to me like the Rust-Oleum hammered paint comes in shades of brown, and "forged hammered" adds gold and pewter. (Don't know what the difference really is - the latter may be more noticeably lumpy, but can't say for sure.)
